How long have you been in your industry?38 years
Why did you choose your industry? It is my passion. It allows me to help others reach their goals and take care of their families. It is intellectually stimulating and challenging.
Who are your typical clients?Fractional executives, solo consultants, executive coaches, and senior business advisors.
What do you like best about being in this industry? It is challenging and you have to keep up with all the latest advancements in sales, marketing, psychology, behavioral economics, and technology (including but not limited to AI). So never a boring moment. I also get to talk to so many accomplished, if struggling, professionals.
What are common problems you see?Lack of knowledge on how to position themselves as one of a few so they are the one and only choice for their clients. Most think they have a lead generation problem when it is actually market positioning an differentiation.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?I remind them of what John Heywood said in his book of proverbs, The Proverbes of John Heywood‎, published in 1546: "You cannot see the forest for trees." To be great at what you do, requires you to live in your trees and weeds. But sales and marketing is done at the forest. So DIY approaches to building your business will at best result in you struggling. The only way to success is to find a DFY (do it for you) solution for your sales and marketing so you spend time doing what you do best and let others who are great at seeing your forest take care of demand generation.
When is your busy season?Year around
What keeps you up at night?Nothing keeps me up at night unless I had too much coffee
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? We use our podcast, get referrals from existing clients, and we have been building our brand for almost 10 years so our reputation precedes us.
How involved are you in the community?I am the president of the Wharton Club of South Florida, a non-profit and volunteer alumni association for those who have graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business? The first step is to be great at what you do. Then figure out everything else that you need to do to be successful and partner with others who are great at those tasks. No successful individual (think sports, entertainment, enterprise CEO, science, etc.) gets there by doing it all themselves. DIY is for hobbyists. Building a team is for your life's work.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Working out (fitness). Exploring the food and culture of South Florida
