Morgan:
Welcome back to another episode of Buzzworthy Businesses, where we highlight businesses who are making an impact. I’m Morgan Allen, joined today by Karthic Ravi with HelioGrid. Karthic, thank you so much for being here.
Karthic:
Thank you for having me on the show.
Morgan:
Absolutely. So tell me about the great work that you’re doing with HelioGrid and the solar industry.
Karthic:
Yeah. So I’ve been in the solar industry since 2012, and I’ve been in this industry when the awareness of the product was very little. And now, if you see, I’m sure there’s a lot of awareness about this right now. We are working with information about every home, and we help establishments to be powered by solar so that they can become self-sufficient in the energy sources that they use.
Morgan:
So as far as I know, solar helps save a lot of money, but it takes some time for it to start saving money. Will you tell me about how long it takes on average to start seeing that return in your energy bill?
Karthic:
Okay. So when it comes to the return on investment in solar, with the current pricing that we have, we are looking at around five to seven years for commercial establishments. For residences, it’s about three years of return on investment.
So which means that after three years for residences or five years for commercial establishments, power is absolutely free for the consumers. So if you ask me, when do you start making money, it’s from day one. And how much time does it take to get installed? It’s probably two days in some cases. For systems less than 5 or 10 kilowatt, it takes less than a week to install. And if it is about 100 kilowatt plus, it probably takes a couple of weeks.
Morgan:
That’s incredible. And it is so beneficial to have that and know that you’re making a difference in the environment. So tell me about the government subsidies. What does that process look like?
Karthic:
Yeah. So for commercial installations, there are no subsidies available from the product pricing perspective, but there is accelerated depreciation that customers can claim if they are a profitable establishment. They will be able to represent the investment they’ve made on solar in year one so that they can offset their profits for that particular year.
But when it comes to residences, the government gives subsidies of about 78,000 for installation, and that is a direct subsidy, which is almost about 30 to 40% of the installation cost.
Morgan:
Yeah, that’s really great. So out of all the solar companies, what makes you guys stand out? What makes you unique?
Karthic:
So installing a solar roof is not just about the panels or the inverter. It’s really about studying the needs of the customer and understanding their demand pattern, how they are utilizing power in their residence or commercial establishment, and designing the equipment to match that need. That is the most important part so they can get that return on investment as quickly as possible.
Secondly, the infrastructure currently available in commercial establishments requires careful design to ensure we get the maximum out of the available space to take advantage of solar power.
There are also nuances where we try to understand what category the customer falls into, and the solar has to be designed in a way that they get the maximum advantage from the investment they are making.
Morgan:
Wonderful. Well, I want to know from your perspective, you’ve seen solar grow and expand a lot over the past 12 years. As an expert in the industry, where do you see it going?
Karthic:
I think it’s going in a very positive direction. It is growing at a very rapid pace right now. Currently, the adoption is about 1 to 1.3%. We are entering the early majority phase of product evolution, which means that in about the next ten years, you would see at least 25 to 30% of homes having solar power.
And I’m sure about 60% of commercial establishments will move to solar because it directly contributes to their bottom line. That’s where business owners are making decisions right now to ensure profitability increases using solar power.
Morgan:
Yeah, absolutely. Well, my fingers are crossed that we continue to adapt to more and more solar energy. Karthic, thank you so much for coming on the show today. If people want to learn more about your company, how can they do so and where can they find you?
Karthic:
