Eric Bohlen
Vice President at eNeura
Website Address: https://eneura.com/
Short company description:
eNeura is a medical technology company focused on advancing noninvasive neuromodulation for the treatment of migraine. The company developed the first and only FDA-cleared, patient-controlled, portable single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (sTMS) device designed to address migraine by targeting underlying neurophysiologic mechanisms. eNeura is committed to evidence-based innovation, responsible clinical collaboration, and expanding access to safe, drug-free treatment options for patients living with migraine.
What’s The Biggest Challenge you are facing in your business or industry?
Compelling private health insurance companies to cover neuromodulation when patients need or want an alternative to pharmacological treatment for migraine disorders.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
Successfully launching a novel technology in the veteran healthcare space to help address the current crises involving over-medication by targeting the underlying neural dysfunction at the source rather than status quo of merely alleviating symptoms associated with migraine disorder. We are changing the standard of care.
How do you see your field evolving in the next 3-5 years?
Public appetite and demand for alternative treatments, including neuromodulation, will continue growing as patients have access to more effective and safer pathways for their health concerns.
Who in your industry do you see as a trend setter and why?
The many thought-leaders (scientists and medical professionals) who have brought awareness of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to the general public as an alternative treatment option for both behavioral health and neurological applications. The work many of these experts have done over the years has advanced the science of TMS to a point where the public is beginning to embrace electromagnetic stimulation for medical needs.

Chris:
Welcome to Industry Champions. I’m your host, Chris Budihas, and today I’m joined virtually with Eric Bohler with eNeura. Eric, how are you?
Eric:
I’m doing fantastic. And you, Chris?
Chris:
I’m doing wonderful, man. So a little bit of background. Where are you originally from?
Eric:
So I’m from the North Carolina area, Charlotte, outside of Charlotte, and served most of my time down in Fayetteville, Fort Bragg. Yeah. And after the military, came on up here to Raleigh, North Carolina. So I guess you could say I’m born and bred.
Chris:
Well, that’s great. Well, hey, first of all, thank you for serving the nation. Obviously, if you didn’t do that, we couldn’t be here today. So let’s talk about the company. You and I talked previously, but for the audience that didn’t catch our last episode, which I would highly encourage you to go back and check out, let’s give them an update on what the company is and what you guys are doing.
Eric:
In our lives, in the last three years, I was thinking through how fast we’ve gone from zero to sixty. So our device for migraine treatment, basic transcranial magnetic stimulation, the technology of an MRI targeting hyperactivity that causes migraine, we’ve been available to veterans in the VA up until now.
Eric:
And we’re beginning to get into the space where active duty and DoD members should be able to access this in the very near future, as well as commercial patients and process through their insurance. We’re not quite there yet, but we are absolutely running in these last three years.
Chris:
Yeah. For background, for our audience that may or may not suffer from chronic headaches or migraines, how big of a problem is this?
Eric:
It’s a significant problem. So one headache or migraine itself is the second leading cause of disability. And with the burn pit exposure, blast injuries in the military, it creates a network disorder in electrical systems.
Eric:
So if you view your brain as an electrical system, it’s kind of firing off very rapidly, out of order, that causes migraine. It’ll knock somebody out for 24 to 48 hours. So it’s a significant issue, with veterans especially.
Chris:
Okay. And then can you talk about the device? You mentioned it’s basically like a miniature MRI. What’s the size, what’s the methodology for treatment? If you suffer from migraines, can you do treatment ahead of time to prevent them or when you have them to reduce the pain?
Eric:
Yeah. So I actually use the device every day, and it’s about the size of a little speaker. It sits right on your desk. You power it up. As soon as it charges up, you put this magnetic coil behind your head, you press a button, instant pulse, and you just do that four times, twice a day.
Eric:
And that calms the hyperactivity of migraine and helps, over time, reduce the number of times that you’re actually going to experience migraine because it reduces the electrical disorder that’s going on in the brain.
Chris:
And is it painful?
Eric:
It is not painful. It’s like you’re wearing a football helmet and somebody is dropping little pebbles on your head. So it’s not electrical shock. It’s just a little light tap on the back of your head.
Chris:
Okay, that’s wonderful. For those who suffer from headaches and migraines, no doubt. One, if you can prevent, and number two, if you do have an onset, you’ve got some form of relief.
Chris:
I know with family members who periodically suffer from migraines, taking medication is not necessarily as effective, especially since there’s no mitigation per se. You’re just working through the symptoms.
Chris:
So with this device, if I went through civilian providers, is this something they can order or will be able to in the future, with insurance reimbursement?
Eric:
Yes, sir. We will have a HCPCS-based code. I believe we’re about 70% of the way. As soon as we have that live, we’ll be able to take a prescription from a commercial provider, run your insurance, and ship your device.
Eric:
And then within the VA, if you talk to your headache specialist or primary care provider about getting a SAVI Dual or TMS or neuro device, they’ll order from us and we ship directly to the patient.
Chris:
Well, that’s wonderful. So it comes straight to them. Are you guys servicing clients nationwide?
Eric:
Not internationally yet. We do have a couple of UK patients. Our focus has been primarily domestic. Right now it is national. We’ll ship anywhere in the 50 states through the VA.
Eric:
But our goal, especially with the UK and Australia, is to expand that business in the coming years.
Chris:
That’s wonderful. Eric, as we wrap up, anything I missed that you want to share with the audience?
Eric:
No, I just really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you, Chris. You’ve been a big advocate for veterans and alternative treatments to get them help.
Eric:
If you are suffering with migraine, especially with the stigma associated with it, talk to a provider. The more we know about TBI and people born with migraine, we know what that can lead to. Make sure you get help, and perhaps SAVI Dual could be a solution for you.
Chris:
Wonderful. So Eric, how do folks find eNeura and how do they find you?
Eric:
eNeura is eNeura.com, and you can find me through there or on LinkedIn. I’m very active and love meeting other veterans or anyone interested in this technology and building that advocate base.
Chris:
That’s great. Eric, thanks for your friendship, thanks for your service. We’ll include all contact information in the show notes and encourage folks to connect with you on LinkedIn or through the website.
Eric:
Yes, sir. I appreciate it, Chris. Thank you so much.
Chris:
Always good to see you. Take care, Eric.
Eric:
Take care.
Chris:
