Why did you choose your industry?I chose dentistry because I’ve always believed that a smile is a gift you can give away while still keeping it for yourself. Helping others maintain their smiles brings me joy and allows me to make a positive impact on their lives.
Who are your typical clients?Our clients include nursing home residents, assisted living patients, and homebound individuals who are unable to visit a dentist. We bring essential oral care directly to them, ensuring they receive the attention and treatment they deserve.
What do you like best about being in this industry?What I enjoy most about providing oral care for older adults are the heartfelt smiles, warm hugs, and genuine “thank yous” I receive. Knowing I’ve made a difference in their lives fills me with joy and reminds me why I’m so passionate about this work.
What are common problems you see?A common problem I see in the industry, especially in nursing homes, is the lack of proper dental training for nursing staff. Additionally, many nursing home residents either lack dental coverage entirely or have insurance that covers very little, leaving critical oral care needs unmet and impacting their overall health.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?My advice to clients is simple: oral care is health care. Your mouth is the gateway to your body, and if it’s not healthy, it can lead to serious health problems, like heart disease, diabetes, and infections. Prioritize regular dental visits, proper hygiene, and addressing oral health issues promptly—it’s a vital part of your overall well-being.
When is your busy season?Every season
What keeps you up at night?What keeps me up at night is knowing that there are older adults not receiving the oral care they desperately need, which could be impacting their overall health and making them sick. This drives my passion to do more and advocate for change.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?My biggest form of marketing is word of mouth. Building strong relationships and delivering exceptional care creates a ripple effect of trust and referrals, allowing my work to speak for itself and reach those who need it most.
How involved are you in the community?Sonya Dunbar passionately dedicates herself to the community, offering oral care training for staff in long-term care facilities, providing free oral health and cancer screenings, and organizing free dental care days. Her tireless efforts ensure that aging adults receive the essential care they deserve while inspiring others to recognize the profound importance of oral health.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?My advice to anyone considering this business is to be patient and persistent. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and while you may not make all the money, the lasting impact you’ll have on people’s lives will be far more rewarding. Stay committed to your mission, and remember that your work truly makes a difference.
