How long have you been in your industry?13 years
Why did you choose your industry?I enjoy helping people secure professional outcomes. 2002, I conducted a large staff layoff due to the dot com bubble burst. Worst week at work ever! So, I created a "back2work" program to help people seeking employment, presenting at job clubs and networking groups. I created a LinkedIn account in early 20024 and saw its power in presenting talent and capabilities to decision-makers. 2009, I successfully used the same approach to present my organization's services during the housing crisis.
Who are your typical clients?Executive and business development teams in B2B technology companies who are understating or under-representing their value and are a well-kept secret.
What do you like best about being in this industry? The daily exposure to learning new things and insights into the fantastic things people are doing.
What are common problems you see?Reliance and focus on tools and technology. Anyone looking to build their business needs clarity and a common understanding of the customer acquisition process, which is supported by both technology and people. Most solutions are presented as functions/features, promising the technology will produce the desired outcomes "auto-magically".
What advice/tips do you have for clients? Most organizations don't treat LinkedIn like an enterprise application when the decision has been made to develop the LinkedIn channel for brand building and business development. Set a clear strategy and then provide the
When is your busy season?Things quiet down in the late Novemebr/December timeframe; otherwise its business as normal.
What keeps you up at night?LinkedIn platform updates and algorithm changes
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?LinkedIn. I deeply understand my target audience's desired outcomes and their frustrations and pain points in achieving those outcomes. This allows me to craft a LinkedIn profile that makes it abundantly clear that I solve those problems. I create content that establishes my expert authority, and then I build the belief that I'm worth a call by engaging with support, interest, and curiosity.
How involved are you in the community?I have been volunteering at a residential senior care home for the last couple of years, talking with residents without family/friends to visit. I bring trays of Costco cookies to share among the residents and care staff. It started several years ago when my wife and I visited on Christmas Day to share cards and gift bags. It made the residents so happy we just kept doing it.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Underdog Rescue (Animal support organizations of all kinds)
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Surround yourself with experts. A few hours of time working with an expert will save weeks or even months trying to figure things out for yourself. As you build your business, each component will be based on efficient and effective best practices.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Camping, hiking and mountain biking
