How long have you been in your industry?30 years
Why did you choose your industry?I started my HR career as a file clerk in a large public hospital in South Florida. I was fascinated by the stories held in those files—from doctors and nurses to cafeteria staff and techs. I’ve always been curious about people, and that role gave me a front-row seat to the inner workings of an entire organization.
Who are your typical clients?I support both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. I especially enjoy helping independent franchisees, having worked in fast food for much of my career, and I’m passionate about serving nonprofits—the backbone of our communities.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I love helping leaders and employees find clarity, confidence, and support. HR impacts every person in an organization, and I’m grateful to play a role in making workplaces better for everyone.
What are common problems you see?Too often, people are placed in HR roles without a full understanding of what a truly effective HR department requires. Being “good with people” is important, but HR also demands knowledge, strategy, and sound judgment. I’m passionate about educating others in our field—because companies are built by people, and HR plays a critical role as the voice of reason and the protector of workplace culture
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Invest in your people and your policies. Don’t wait for problems to arise—build a strong HR foundation early. When leaders prioritize clarity, communication, and compliance, they create workplaces where both people and business can thrive.
When is your busy season? My busiest times are typically the start of the year and fall—when organizations are focused on planning, compliance updates, performance reviews, and setting strategic HR goals.
What keeps you up at night?I think about the people who are trying to lead without the right tools, and the employees who get caught in the gaps—unclear policies, missed compliance steps, or poor communication. It’s not about perfection, but about preventable problems that impact real people.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Through relationships—referrals, speaking engagements, and being active in the community. I also share insights on LinkedIn and through my books to help people understand the value of good HR. When people see I care and know my stuff, the work tends to find me.
How involved are you in the community?I try to stay connected by supporting local nonprofits, mentoring HR professionals, and speaking at events that help leaders grow. My brother-in-law, Hugh H. Jones Jr., was a big part of the Jacksonville community and really inspired me to give back. I started a leadership coaching scholarship in his name to help others continue that kind of impact.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity? That’s a tough one—I work with so many great organizations. But I have a special place in my heart for any nonprofit that supports our veterans. They’ve given so much, and they deserve our support in return.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Talent acquisition is a great way to start—it gives you a front-row seat to how people and business connect. Be curious. Ask questions. Get to know the mission and values of the company, and build real relationships with the people you work with. HR isn’t just about policies—it’s about understanding people and helping the organization work better because of it.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I love spending time with my family and cooking for them. I also enjoy knitting items for local charities and writing—both HR books and short stories I occasionally submit for publication. It’s a fun mix of creativity, giving back, and staying grounded.
