What strategies do you use to improve your performance?
To improve my performance, I focus on continuous growth, both personally and professionally. In my field, science and best practices are always evolving, so I make it a priority to stay current through continuing education courses, professional conferences, and specialized certifications. These experiences keep me sharp, inspired, and connected to other leaders in nutrition and wellness. I also believe in reflection and feedback. After major projects or client interactions, I take time to assess what went well and what could be refined. That process helps me stay accountable and open-minded. Finally, I balance ambition with self-care. I perform best when I’m grounded, rested, and aligned with my purpose. When I’m learning, growing, and taking care of my own well-being, I can show up as my best self for my clients and my career.
Can You Discuss a Time When You Had to Work with a Team to Achieve a Goal?
One experience that stands out was when I worked with an interdisciplinary team to improve health outcomes. Each member (certified diabetes care and education specialist, respiratory therapist, health coach, dietitian, social worker, community health worker) brought different expertise and perspectives. Our goal was to create a more coordinated approach so patients received consistent education and follow-up care instead of mixed messages. It wasn’t always easy, everyone had their own priorities and workflow, but by focusing on collaboration over competition, listening actively, and finding common ground, we built a system that truly worked. That experience reinforced for me that teamwork isn’t about everyone doing the same thing, but everyone collaborating on different aspects of the health picture to help patients feel their absolute best.

Now part of leadership to me is wellness. So today we are talking to Emily Conyers of NuSparkle Nutrition and wellness is all about her and what she does.

Emily, welcome to the show.

Talk to us. Tell us a little bit about what you do and how you are making a difference in the lives of your clients.
Emily
Yeah. So I actually do one on one nutrition counseling via telehealth. Though I will likely next month, start doing some in-person sessions, so that’ll be a cool change. But I do specialize in chronic kidney disease, nutrition. I’m a board certified specialist in renal nutrition. And I also do weight management.
Tony
Okay.
Emily
And I just something I just added actually is GI mapping. So. Yeah. So this is, a gut microbiome test, see what’s going on on an even more targeted level.
Tony
So dive a little bit deeper into that. And because I’m sure, like myself, I don’t really know too much about that. But what are the benefits? What can we learn from that. And then based on certain results. What do you recommend to your clients?
Emily
Yeah. So usually, you know, we would kind of do everything right. We don’t kind of kind of do more guessing, see what works. Where is this going to be more targeted approach will see if you have any pathogens parasites. If you have the ratio of good bacteria to not so great bacteria. And the reason it is really important is because a lot of our chronic conditions stem from chronic inflammation in the body, and we’re finding more and more how much the gut is kind of the root of all these issues.
Emily
Also even the gut mind connection. So a lot of mental health, issues are being connected to the gut too. So if we can kind of help get that gut in line, everything else might fall into line a little bit better too. So, you know, that would tell us if there’s any specific supplements that we need to add or if there’s any specific foods that might be a better food specifically for you based on what’s going on in your gut.
Tony
So that’s interesting. So based on the results of the GI mapping, you can tell what foods people specifically should stay away from. And of course not. Just like gluten free, you know, and the gluten, but like what types of vegetables, which type of meats things.
Emily
Yeah, it would it would really just give us more clarity on do you, you know, do you need more of an anti-inflammatory diet. Do we need to be particularly vigilant about that with you based on, you know, what your gut bacteria is looking like? And then it would also tell me, you know, if we need more specific fermented foods and again, specific supplements because some supplements are anti microbial.
Tony
Right.
Emily
Sometimes we might need digestive enzymes. And a lot of times this stuff is just temporary just to kind of reset what going on in there and then kind of rebuild. So once we get rid of some of the underlying issues, we rebuild the good bacteria from there. And feed them plenty of fiber.
Tony
Oh, absolutely. And so one of the things I like to talk about when it pertains to leadership is self leadership and self leadership, really. First and foremost starts with our wellness, because it’s our responsibility as leaders to be fully present for those we lead right inside and outside the workplace. And so when we talk about our wellness, we have the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social.
Tony
Right. Talk about how all of those things are connected. Because you talked a little bit about how the gut is really the control center of our wellness, right. It can affect, as you said, it can affect our mental wellness. But talk about how all of those things are connected.
Emily
Yeah. So anytime I work with my clients, we’re working on every aspect of health, not just nutrition and not just exercise. Because if you think about it, you’re not going to care about what you ate or if you had time to exercise. If you are stressed beyond all recognition, sleep deprived, depressed, you know, if those things aren’t addressed as well, it’s really hard to have the full picture of wellness.
Emily
So we’re working on all aspects, and I generally have people focus on 1 to 3 very targeted specific things until we talk the next time. So it all really kind of comes together so that we can address every aspect of health.
Tony
Right. And there’s even a connection I’ve read that even internal trauma stuff that you’ve gone through in the past that you’re not even aware of consciously but subconsciously it still affects your physical health.
Emily
Absolutely. Yeah.
Tony
And that’s a whole nother level. It even has roots to cancer. So that’s a it’s an important it’s a it’s important to have someone like you to give that type of advice and look and dig deeper to make sure that we uncover all areas that could be affecting our wellness.
Emily
Right. And, you know, it’s really like you said, about being a leader. If you want to be a leader yourself, you have to make time for yourself and your self-care. You know, I try to get my clients maybe if they’re not exercising yet, you need to schedule this workout as an appointment, right? Or an important meeting with some one of your clients, maybe.
Emily
You know, it’s not. And I might go. Or I might have to, you know, if I have time, it’s like, no, if we want to see real results, we have to make ourselves our health a priority as well. And that’s where I’m helpful in providing that accountability factor. And, you know, working with you through okay, what are your barriers and how are we going to actually work through those?
Emily
Because a lot of times it is a lot of stress and emotional stuff going on. So not only are we addressing the food itself, we’re working on that to you. So yeah, you know, I feel like I’m definitely, a counselor, all intertwined into one.
Tony
And that’s so good. That’s good. Any time you try to change behavior, it’s important to have an accountability partner. So when you can be that resource to somebody that is hugely impactful, you know, and and that’s great. That’s great to have somebody that you can rely on and get great advice and be a great resource. So, I appreciate you being on.
Tony
