Short company description:

A holistic medical practice focused on finding and treating the root cause of health problems using hormone replacement therapy, peptide therapy, vitamin supplementation, and medical weight loss therapies alongside modern medicine

What is the most fascinating fact you know?

Our thoughts influence the world around us, and this has been verified in multiple well Designed scientific studies over decades.

How did you acquire deep knowledge in your area of expertise?

Like most medical practitioners I only learned enough about the practice of medicine to get started. Beyond that I’m a lifelong student, I’m always reading up on the latest clinical trials and I like to learn from multiple sources. I follow other medical practitioners in hormone replacement therapy and weight loss And I’m always looking for resources like online courses about the latest developments in the practice of health optimization as it is An exciting growing field. Also, I like to learn a lot from patients, many of them are well educated, and well studied on the latest Peptide research And supplements. I also like to network with other professionals in the health and wellness space and learn the way they help Clients reach their best performance.

How has mentorship shaped your journey to becoming an expert?

My initial journey into starting my own clinic, started with following an expert who had done it many times over and since that time I’ve specifically sought out the help of others around me who are experts in a particular aspect of what I’m trying to accomplish. Morgan Allen is a coach who specifically taught me to think more boldly and more confidently as I struck out into my own practice. Without her guidance, I think I would have let fear keep me small. I also specifically asked for the mentorship and guidance of a fellow business owner who owns a large group practice. She gave me several ideas that I hadn’t thought of, and I implemented them quickly with great results. I never hesitate to pick the brain of someone who aligns with my energy and excitement about personal growth.

Who do you admire in the industry and why?

When someone tells me something that resonates with me, I can feel it and even if It feels scary, I try out new things all the time. I generally like feedback and I use both positive and negative feedback to refine in shape how I provide motivation and care to clients. Following a new idea, Even if it feels challenging Always leads to growth for me whether the experience is positive or negative.

Morgan:
Welcome back to another episode of Maximize Your Potential, where we highlight people who are making an impact. I’m Morgan Allen, joined today by Erica Humbert with Optimized Life Health. Erica, thank you for being here. So glad.

Erica:
To be.

Morgan:
Here. Yes. So tell me about Optimized Life Health.

Erica:
Well, I am a nurse practitioner with a background in primary care. So for years I was seeing patients in primary care and seeing the same symptoms over and over. Fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, difficulty losing weight. And I only had 15 minutes to try to help that person. And I just thought, there’s got to be a better way. So I designed my own practice with the idea of not just finding and treating disease, but actually getting that person feeling the best they’ve ever felt and addressing the same things I was hearing over and over. And really taking the time with each person. And I’ve been able to have a lot of success in doing that. Just taking that time and finding the root cause of why that person is fatigued or why they’re having difficulty losing weight. And it’s really gratifying for me because that’s why I got into health care. I really wanted to help people feel better, to heal, and I’ve been able to do that in my practice, and I’m just really excited about it.

Morgan:
Yes. And I, I’m lucky enough to have known you and seen many of the people you’ve worked with and seen all of their success. So what are the steps that you take people through to help find what works best for them?

Erica:
That’s a great question. I just take them and in really my first visit, I just take an hour and I ask them about every aspect of their life. How many hours are you sleeping? What supplements are you taking? Let’s talk about your nutrition. And I ask all kinds of questions. And then I take the time to tailor a plan for them. We typically order labs. I do a physical exam, and then we come up with, what are we going to do that’s going to be specific to your life, your symptoms, and how are we going to fit it into your schedule? And I make a customized plan with them for them. And then I see them back at regular intervals and fine tune that plan. What’s working, what’s not working, and how are you feeling along the way? And this just worked out really, really well.

Morgan:
That’s incredible. A full hour for the initial consultation. That’s very special and not something you see often in the practice of health care, right? So what is it that you think is the biggest help whenever someone comes to you? That’s one of the biggest things that they need help with, something across the board. Yes.

Erica:
I tend to see a lot of patients in midlife, and I’ll call midlife anywhere from mid 30s to mid 60s. So it’s a huge span of our life. And oftentimes the root cause of common problems in that time frame is hormone deficiency or hormone imbalance. So I find that by listening to the person and I find that in the lab work and when I can address the hormone picture, usually people feel so much better and they don’t need a lot of other medical interventions. And of course, lifestyle. Most people understand some lifestyle changes. I know I need to go to the gym. I know I need to eat healthy foods, but there’s so many myths and misconceptions out there that I really have to fine tune. Like what’s going to work for that individual person. So I would say lifestyle changes and finding and treating hormonal imbalances, that is not well done in routine primary care. I found on the whole, patients come to me all the time with stories of the provider, didn’t check my hormones or they didn’t. They just said I was normal. Well, normal is a very relative term. I don’t want someone to feel or be normal just in the normal range. How can we get you to the best you’ve ever felt, to the top of that range, and to.

Morgan:
Help them maximize their potential?

Erica:
Yes, yes. I don’t just want to be like, okay, let’s take abnormal to normal, check the box and get you out the door. I want to say, what are your goals and how can we get you feeling the best you’ve ever felt? I think everyone should feel that way. And I reject the notion that a lot of people say, I’m getting older. This is just how it should be. I’m supposed to be tired. I’m supposed to be miserable. I’m not supposed to feel good. That’s not true. I think we can feel our best at every age and every stage.

Morgan:
Oh, I love that so much. And you help multiple people do this, I say multiple. You got so many people to do this because you also do speaking engagements, and you inform people on the effects of cortisol and the effects of the hormones and what happens. So tell us about your public speaking.

Erica:
This I love. I really find I’m addressing a lot of the same things over and over. Patients have many people that come to see me have the same misconceptions or the same problems, and I keep finding myself doing the same teaching points with individual patients, which I don’t mind doing. But there is a bigger audience out there. There is more that I can do by talking to groups and explaining these things. As a whole. So I’ve gone to a couple of conferences and spoken to them. I’ve spoken to local women’s groups and had great success, and I just love reaching people any way that I can reach them. If they come to see me as a patient, that’s great. Or if they find another provider they trust, that’s also awesome. I just want everybody to have the tools and to know that it’s possible for them to feel really, really good. And I like to dispel the common myths that are out there, especially about my favorite myth to dispel are the ones about women in hormones. A lot of people are afraid of hormones. They don’t understand them, they’re afraid they’re harmful, and they’re definitely not. So when we can educate women about them and have them make the right choice with their doctor and get on hormones if they need them, it’s a game changer.

Morgan:
And I love doing that. Yeah. So for those watching who want to take a step, maybe they’re not ready to go all in or come see you just yet, but you have so much expertise, so much value to provide. What’s one thing you think everyone should be doing to optimize their health?

Erica:
That’s such a good question. I would say everyone can start a vitamin and supplement regimen, and I can give you kind of my favorite vitamins and supplements for the show, notes, and everyone can start some kind of movement. It could be a walk around the block 20 minutes, a couple days a week and getting sleep. So underrated. When I talk to people, they’re like, I don’t know why I’m fatigued. How many hours of sleep do you eat? Oh, 3 or 4. Oh my gosh, not enough. We all need to make sleep a top priority. Huge benefits are there, so I would claim those as like the top advice for everyone. Get proper sleep, start some vitamins and supplements and get some movement every day.

Morgan:
Fantastic. Well, we’ll get those vitamins and we’ll put them in the show notes. Thank you so much, Erica. If people want to learn more about you, how can they do so?

Erica:
Great ways to go to my website OptimizedLifeHealth.com. I’m also on Facebook and Instagram, and I’ll provide those links for your shout outs as well. That would be a great segue.
