ASCP Northern California Chapter
What innovations are improving patient care in your facility? Innovations improving patient care in our facility include advances in diagnostic testing, automation, and improved laboratory workflows that help deliver faster, more accurate results for clinicians and patients. We are also seeing increased use of digital technologies and data-driven processes that improve efficiency, turnaround times, and overall quality of care. In addition, greater collaboration between laboratory professionals, pathologists, and healthcare teams is helping support more personalized and timely treatment decisions for patients.
How is your hospital addressing the growing demand for services? Our hospital is addressing the growing demand for services by focusing on efficiency, innovation, and workforce collaboration. We continue to improve laboratory workflows through process improvement projects, updated technologies, and streamlined processes that help increase testing capacity while maintaining high-quality patient care.
We are also investing in professional development, cross-functional collaboration, and recruitment efforts to help support and retain skilled healthcare and laboratory professionals. In addition, expanding access to advanced diagnostics and improving communication between laboratory teams and clinicians allows us to deliver faster, more accurate results that support timely patient care and clinical decision-making.
What strategies are in place to retain and support healthcare workers? Our organization supports and retains healthcare workers by focusing on professional development, workplace collaboration, mentorship, and member well-being. Strategies include providing continuing education opportunities, leadership development, networking programs, and access to advanced educational programs that help employees grow professionally and work more efficiently.
We also emphasize team-based collaboration, open communication, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and creating a strong sense of belonging within the laboratory and healthcare team. Fostering an environment where employees feel valued, respected, and supported helps strengthen morale, engagement, and long-term retention.
In addition, recruitment initiatives, mentorship programs for early-career professionals, and efforts to provide volunteer opportunities that is flexible with work-life balance are important parts of maintaining a strong and sustainable healthcare workforce.
How are you using data or AI to improve health outcomes? We use some AI and data-driven technologies to help improve efficiency, workflow optimization, and clinical decision-making. However, we still rely primarily on human expertise, critical thinking, and clinical judgment to ensure accuracy, quality, and patient safety.
Laboratory professionals, pathologists, and healthcare teams play an essential role in interpreting complex results, identifying abnormalities, and making informed decisions that directly impact patient care. We view AI as a supportive tool that can enhance efficiency, but not replace the experience, knowledge, and collaboration provided by skilled laboratory professionals.
What challenges are you facing post-pandemic? One of the biggest challenges we are facing post-pandemic is rebuilding engagement and organizational momentum. During the pandemic, many of our board members retired or became inactive, which created leadership and volunteer gaps within our local chapter. As a result, our ASCP Northern California Chapter is essentially in a rebuilding phase as we work to grow and strengthen the organization again.
Another challenge is securing additional sponsors and exhibitors for our educational events and conferences. As a nonprofit professional organization, we rely heavily on donations, sponsorships, and exhibitor support to financially sustain our programs and continue providing valuable opportunities for laboratory professionals.
We also need greater member engagement and volunteer participation to help support events, networking activities, and chapter initiatives. Like many professional organizations after the pandemic, rebuilding in-person participation and reconnecting members has taken time. However, we see this as an opportunity to re-engage the laboratory community, attract new professionals, and continue building a strong and collaborative network moving forward.
How do you ensure compassionate care across all departments? We ensure compassionate care across all departments by creating an environment where members feel supported, respected, and connected to the overall mission of the ASCP Northern California Chapter.
We also prioritize an environment where members feel empowered to contribute their perspectives and support one another. When our members feel valued, it strengthens morale, improves communication, and helps create a more positive experience.
Even in laboratory medicine, where many professionals work behind the scenes, compassionate care remains essential. Compassion starts internally with strong teamwork, open communication, and a culture of collaboration across the laboratory departments. We recognize that every test result directly impacts a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare journey. By focusing on accuracy, efficiency, professionalism, and collaboration with clinical teams, we help ensure patients receive timely and high-quality care.
What’s your outlook on the future of healthcare delivery? My outlook on the future of healthcare delivery is very positive, especially as healthcare becomes more focused on innovation, collaboration, and personalized patient care. I believe we will continue seeing major advancements in diagnostic testing that will help improve efficiency, accuracy, and overall patient outcomes.
I also think healthcare delivery will become more team-oriented and interdisciplinary. Laboratory professionals, pathologists, clinicians, nurses, and healthcare leaders will continue working more closely together to support faster diagnoses, earlier interventions, and more individualized treatment decisions.
At the same time, I believe one of the most important priorities for the future will be investing in people. Technology can improve workflows and provide valuable tools, but healthcare still depends heavily on human expertise, communication, compassion, and collaboration. Supporting healthcare workers and having their best interest in mind will be essential for encouraging the next generation of clinical lab scientist.
I also see greater emphasis being placed on preventative care and early detection, where laboratory medicine and pathology will continue playing a critical role in helping providers identify disease earlier and guide treatment decisions more effectively.
Overall, I believe the future of healthcare delivery will be more connected and lab-centered, while still recognizing the importance of the human side of healthcare.
