What is the biggest marketing challenge that you will face in the upcoming year?The biggest marketing challenge I will face in the upcoming year is increasing awareness of the JSEB nonprofit certification program among organizations that qualify but may not yet see the value or understand the requirements.

What are the biggest challenges your department is currently facing? One of the main challenges our department faces is making sure that both nonprofits and small businesses clearly understand and meet all certification requirements. Many organizations have the passion and mission but may lack the administrative capacity or knowledge of compliance standards. Another challenge is broadening awareness — ensuring more eligible organizations across Duval County know about the JSEB program and the resources available to them.

How are you engaging with the community or citizens you serve? We engage with the community and the citizens we serve through multiple avenues. We host trainings and workshops at education centers across Jacksonville, maintain an updated events page to keep organizations informed, and provide monthly certification and capacity building sessions. We also strengthen our impact by collaborating with partners such as Wealth Watchers, Kids Hope Alliance, and other local organizations to expand resources and outreach. In addition, we participate in community events, share information through newsletters and direct outreach, and create spaces for nonprofits and small businesses to connect, learn, and grow.

What initiatives are in place to support transparency and accountability? We maintain clear certification guidelines, conduct site visits for verification, and require up-to-date documentation from all applicants. We also provide public reporting on program activities, keep open communication with community partners, and offer monthly trainings to ensure organizations understand requirements and expectations.

How are you modernizing services for today’s digital world? We are expanding digital access by streamlining application processes online, updating our events page regularly, and using virtual trainings to reach more organizations. We also leverage technology to track compliance, share resources, and connect nonprofits with opportunities faster and more efficiently.

What leadership lessons have helped you in public service? I’ve learned that true leadership requires listening first, leading with empathy, and building trust through consistency. Collaboration is key — no one achieves impact alone. I’ve also found that patience and adaptability are essential in guiding organizations through complex processes while still keeping the focus on community outcomes.

How do you address national security concerns in today’s climate? While I am not directly in national defense, I see national security as tied to community resilience. Strengthening local nonprofits and small businesses ensures that essential services, resources, and trusted networks are in place during times of crisis. By promoting transparency, compliance, and collaboration, we help create stable, prepared communities that can withstand and recover from economic or social disruptions, which directly supports broader national security.

What’s your vision for the future of public service or defense? My vision for the future of public service is one where collaboration, innovation, and accessibility are at the center. Public service should leverage technology to deliver faster, smarter solutions, while still being deeply rooted in listening to the needs of the people. By empowering local organizations, fostering transparency, and building trust, public service can become a stronger bridge between government and citizens, ensuring long-term security, equity, and sustainability.
