What trends are currently shaping the construction industry?Gone are the white shaker cabinets and the open living spaces without a butler pantry. The butler pantries are a must at this point. Open spaces are still key, especially post COVID. Everyone is enjoying more outdoor space and time together.
How are you implementing sustainable building practices? When available, we recycle at every possible opportunity. Recently we had leftover insulation on a jobsite and we moved it to another jobsite that was short insulation. A lot of builders would get lazy and not go to the effort to move insulation 2 hours but we do. Every small amount helps.
What challenges are you facing with labor shortages or supply chains?Skilled labor is always a much larger issue than material. We are always in hiring mode whether we need talent or not. I’d rather hire someone if it’s a solid person than miss out on a great employee and need them later.
How do you ensure safety on your job sites? We have weekly toolbox talks and we live by the creed that everyone is a safety officer. It doesn’t matter what your role is on the jobsite, everyone is empowered to call out a safety violation without fear of reprimand. Above all, I want all of our employees and subcontractors and suppliers safe.
What role does technology play in your planning and execution?Tech is huge for us. It is our communication platform with our clients and it is our communication platform with our suppliers and subcontractors. We have cameras on each of our jobsites which allows me to monitor every jobsite from my cell phone from Virginia to Tennessee to multiple sites in Florida. It also helps with security and our insurance policies.
Can you describe a recent project that stood out to you?I love all of our projects but we recently completed a home for a disabled veteran, SGT Sean Karpf, in St. Augustine, Florida. It was our third home that we completed for Homes For Our Troops. We love working for this great non-profit organization. They have built over 420 homes for severely disabled veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan nationwide in the past 11 years and we have four more homes under construction for disabled veterans right now across TN, VA, and FL.
What advice would you give to someone entering the construction field?Be a sponge. Listen more than you speak. Yes technology is important but the gentlemen and ladies that are using pen and paper and a clipboard have more knowledge than any technology tool you might be smart on so those are the people you need to spend time with. They have the experience, they have seen what works and what doesn’t work and they have perservered in situations that you will encounter.
