How long have you been in your industry?1 year
Why did you choose your industry?Major tech conferences offer a tremendous amount of insight and content, if you know where to go, who to see, and how to navigate the complexity, chaos, and nuance of an event like South by Southwest in Austin (SXSW) or the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. We identified an opportunity to find the signal from the noise by providing a focused experience and collectively looking for the Red Threads and missing threads - content to carry outside the event.
Who are your typical clients? We work with executive and thought leaders gacing barriers to attending these events, whether fiscal (what's the ROI), cultural (it's just a big party) or practical (how will I navigate this chaos). Our objective is to collectively find and experience meaningful content that provides actionable insights and clearly demonstrates the value of our approach.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I get to see and learn so much. I think of it as the wisdom of the collective. What I see and experience alone is contextualized through one set of lenses - mine. When a group of Red Thread Xers go out, we are seeing, and experiencing, and learning across the breadth of what they choose to do (following their journey) and what we collectively reflect upon and take with us.
What are common problems you see?Being too restrictive is one. We are not tour guides who will walk you from booth to booth or event to event at Red Thread X. We will provide knowledge and our expertise to help you select your path, and we foster serendipity by letting you follow it. Being too focused on the social side at the expense of meaningful content (speakers, sessions, etc) is the other main problem.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Don't go it alone, but don't be afraid to give these events a shot. Yes they are crowded and chaotic, but the value of the content, experience, and connections is immeasurable. I have learned so much from going to these conferences and stepping in to the wild. It's quite the adventure so work with Red Thread X - we are your sherpas (knowledge and experience) for these adventures.
When is your busy season?January through March - CES, SXSW, National Retail Federation, JP Morgan Healthcare and more...we call it the predictive quarter when all of these ideas are flowing at the start of the year.
What keeps you up at night?March 2025 is our MVP for Red Thread X. We have all the resources we need and amazing partners and teammates, but we have to deliver. The devil's in the details at this point.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? We are using LinkedIn, Instagram and our website for social media/digital marketing, and our extended professional networks for word-of-mouth. We shared our report from SXSW2024 to gain traction and have established partnerships with influencers. The most significant partnership is with SXSW, which is an amazing opportunity to demonstrate our value to individuals and the event.
How involved are you in the community?I am a volunteer with Travis Manion Foundation locally, focused on character development at our high school. I also enjoy mentoring young fathers in my neighborhood in their journeys with their families. I'm also on the board for two nonprofits, helping them achieve their missions and build for the future.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Travis Manion Foundation - their work for Veterans, Gold Star Families, and developing character in youth inspires me.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business? If you're gonna do it, do it right. It's a lot of work to find the signal in the noise, or the needle in the haystack, or make order from the chaos. I remind myself when we are slogging through requirements or analysis that opportunity is often missed because it shows up in coveralls looking like work. It's worth it to found and build your organization, and you have to set your mind to the task.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I love to mountain bike, hike, fish and be outdoors. I'm solar powered and want to be outside in the sun as much as possible.
