How long have you been in your industry?22 years
Why did you choose your industry?I had just retired from the Navy and the Defense industry was the most familiar area for my focus. I started as a consultant, specifically Navy ship weapons, sensors and training. I was soon joined by several former ship mates and we grew to become a significant provider of training.
Who are your typical clients?U.S. Navy
What do you like best about being in this industry?We are helping the young men and women who serve to be the best in tactics, training and procedures to defend their ships.
What are common problems you see?The Government and the Department of Defense are not great partners. It is very competitive but also highly constrained by regulations.
When is your busy season?Year round efforts.
What keeps you up at night?Right now, things are going very, very well. My team is focused, we have solid partnerships with some major players and the contracts are solid.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?We grow through performance. We bring in very good people to fill the various billets and they perform well. We have great stability as well, since we take good care of our employees. The customer sees this and understands the value that provides them.
How involved are you in the community?I have been on the Student Affairs Community Council at UNF. I am the past chair.I am on the boards of the North Florida Land Trust and The Chesapeake Legal alliance.I am a guest lecturer in leadership to the Honors College at UNF.I am a life member of the US Navy League.I am a life member of the Surface Navy Association.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?I am on two board, the North Florida Land Trust and the Chesapeake Legal Alliance
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Before you launch out on your own it would be very useful to spend a few years in the industry working for another company. I did not do that.It is good to have some experience in Defense procurement. I did not do that.Have a unique skill, talent or expertise that the DOD needs. I did not do that.Have a robust network that can help guide you. Yep, still didn't do that.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I enjoy travel and I combine that with my love of sailing.
