How long have you been in your industry?25 years
Why did you choose your industry? After serving in the US Navy for four years, I transitioned right into University of North Florida for a Finance degree. A mentor gave me the best advice, which was to focus on a specific industry (Healthcare). Every time I wrote papers I picked healthcare companies. I wrote a paper my Junior year that resulted in the CEO of that company hiring me before my Senior year.
Who are your typical clients?Veterans and First Responders that have experienced a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post traumatic Stress (PTSD). DoD estimates 20% of veterans have experienced a TBI. Eligible applicants can access and receive care from Haley Brain Wellness Program regardless of ability to pay.
What do you like best about being in this industry?Serving veterans and first responders is my life passion and mission. I survived a horrible car accident which resulted in a significant TBI. I was a patient at UF Health Haley Brain Wellness Program in Cohort three and graduated the program in March 2022. The program changed my life and I wanted to give back
What are common problems you see?Our biggest challenge is casting a wider net to get more veterans and first responders into our program. It is estimated that there are more than 100,000 veterans in Duval County, in our back yard.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? Our Haley Brain Wellness Program consists of a 3-day Evaluation and then a 3-week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Brain injuries and the associated symptoms can be complicated. I recommend the veteran and first responder attend the 3-day Evaluation to determine diagnosis and treatment options. After the 3-day evaluation we deliver "hope" and 3-day Evaluation Summary outlining provider recommendations.
When is your busy season? We remain busy every month.
What keeps you up at night?Developing and deploying a plan for the program to become self-sustainable and not dependent on grants. Working with insurance companies to develop a bundled payment model for the treatment of TBIs and PTSD.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? Our Outreach Coordinator and I are actively engaged in the community, attending various veteran and first responder events. We also have social media channels, including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.
How involved are you in the community?Currently a mentor in for Veteran Treatment Court (VTC) in St. Johns County. Will be transitioning to Nassau County VTC in a few months. I sit on the Nassau County Veterans Council and am also on the Advisory Board for the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone. I am an active member of the Church of Eleven22.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Emmanuel Project of Northeast Florida (Co-founder)
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Being a Healthcare Administrator requires a diverse set of skills and abilities. Understanding patient care models and protecting the privacy of patient care is critical. You are a connector, problem solver, and a change agent. This is a very niche segment in healthcare serving those that have served our country and communities to heal their invisible wounds.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Working out, running, rucking and spending time with my amazing girls and my grandson.
