How long have you been in your industry?14 years
Why did you choose your industry?I have been training my whole life for what I do, amassing experience and expertise that helps me provide value in every sector. Speaking to large audiences and training leaders to create positive, more profitable workplace cultures.
Who are your typical clients? My clients are industry conferences in need of a compelling, entertaining keynote speaker, and large corporations, government agencies and universities that need to improve all workplace outcomes by training managers and leaders how to maximize the happiness and engagement of their workforce.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I create positive change immediately for my clients. Everything I share is actionable and EASY, and the results are often larger and faster than expected. That Is the greatest thing about being a Happiness & Inclusion speaker - everyone benefits from what I deliver, with no downside.
What are common problems you see?ACCIDENTAL MANAGERS! In all workplaces, we put people in charge of others without ensuring they have the requisite skills, or without giving them any training to manage effectively, or we don't even realize they are managers, like with doctors, lawyers, engineers and others. Employers would save billions of dollars by training leaders how to get the best out of everyone who answers to them.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Only three things are required to have a happy, engaged workforce. First, everyone needs to get a sense of accomplishment form their work - a feeling that they are making progress on work that matters. Second, once trained, people need autonomy. No one wants to be micromanaged, and simply because someone approaches a task differently than the manager, doesn't make them wrong. Third, everyone need acknowledgement of their contributions and appreciation for the work they do. That's it1 Think of Triple-A – Accomplishment, Autonomy, Acknowledgement. This will yield phenomenal results.
When is your busy season?February - June and September - November.
What keeps you up at night? We are at a political inflection point where focusing on the happiness of the workforce, and creating inclusive spaces, has been greatly diminished. This is a huge mistake, and will lead to far worse outcomes for the employers getting it wrong now.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?I am in the process of launching a new website and speaker reel, which will be shared to all past clients, on social media, and through my mailing list. I also am booked to speak at large conferences and industry associations, which always yields further bookings. In addition, I am highly active in my local community, serving on appointed boards and mentoring startup founders.
How involved are you in the community?I serve on the Board of Directors for my city's Convention and Visitors Bureau, am a volunteer with the New Neighbors League, speak locally to most of the professional and civic groups in my town, and I am the Entrepreneur in Residence for Leadership, Culture and Narrative for Launch Fayette, a non-profit startup incubator.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Center for Missing and Exploited Children
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Get on as many stages as possible! Have great content and deliver is very well, and then be sure to get video with good sound, so that you have content to share. Let everyone in your network know that you are a speaker. Someone will need one soon, and when they do, be prepared to know your worth, ask for that, and overdeliver.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Riding horses, hiking with my dog, book clubs, finding hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants, snorkeling
