Welcome to Living My Faith, a weekly show that celebrates the everyday believers who are walking with Jesus not just on Sundays, but in every area of their lives. From relationships and parenting to health, habits, and home, our guests share how they keep their faith at the center of it all. Hosted in Jacksonville, Florida and supported by Christ-centered partners, Living My Faith is a space where real life meets real faith. Today our host, James Fenimore spoke with Mike McCann.

James:
Hi, and welcome back to Living My Faith on FaithWorks TV. I’m James Fenimore, and today we have a great treat for you. We’re joined by Mike McCann. Mike, how are you?
Mike:
I’m doing good. Thank you.
James:
Mike, we like to start the show with one basic question: How are you living your faith?
Mike:
The biggest thing is by example. Right now, I have employees who look to me every day for decisions—and sometimes even for life advice. And just by God’s grace, this happened only hours before coming on the show today: one of my employees told me he’s going to return to the Catholic Church and officially become a member again after stepping away for a very long time.
That’s not something that happens every day. I truly believe God put that on his heart on the same day I was coming in for this interview. It’s an amazing thing. Being able to show what my faith means to me—through our operations and my daily life—is the most important part.
James:
That’s amazing. Right before coming here, that’s the news you get. God is so good, right? He reveals Himself in the most unexpected and joyful ways sometimes. When it comes to living your faith, you mentioned living by example and living an attractive life so people naturally ask about it. Can you speak to that a little more—how people see the way you live and how that draws them in?
Mike:
Absolutely. We have 16 employees, and whenever someone is onboarded, part of my conversation with them is very clear: “Hey, I’m a Christian, and you’re going to hear about that.” That doesn’t mean you’re required to be a Christian, and it doesn’t mean we’re having Bible study before work starts. But my faith is going to flow out of who I am.
That also puts pressure on me—in a good way—to actually live it out. And part of that means when you’re part of this organization, you’re also helping us do some really meaningful things in the community.
Right before Christmas this year, we’ve adopted 65 kids. That extends out from the store itself. As Christians, we’re called to care for those in need in our community. Our Christmas adoption program started in 2017 and has grown every year. We’ve also done Thanksgiving adoptions, and we donate mattresses every single month.
So when I tell people during onboarding that when you work here, you’re part of that—that’s really an overflow of my heart for the community.
James:
Wow, I love that. I also like what you said about accountability—once you say it out loud, you have to live it out. It also creates clarity so people don’t feel uncomfortable, though sometimes it’s okay to make people a little uncomfortable. We’re called to speak the Word.
First of all, what’s the name of the company? We want to make sure everyone hears it—Jax Co. Furniture. And can you speak a little more about the initiatives you mentioned, especially the child adoption and mattress donations?
Mike:
Sure. We have two main initiatives. The first is our mattress donation program. Anytime someone purchases anything from Jax Co. Furniture, a portion of those funds goes back into the community. Since opening in 2018, we’ve donated over 350 beds to families and veterans in need here locally.
We work through nonprofits, the VA, churches, and religious organizations, and we let them do the vetting. I’m not the one deciding who “deserves” a bed—people closer to the situation help guide us and give us the green light.
The second initiative is our Christmas adoption program. This is done through friends, family, customers—anyone who wants to participate. We share it through social media and email so people can get involved.
This year, we have 65 kids through a local underserved school. Each family or individual adopts one child and receives their age, interests, and clothing size, then shops specifically for that child. There are lots of general donation boxes out there, which are great, but this allows you to make a personal impact on one child’s life.
We leave it open for people to include a card or even a Bible if they want. It’s simply a way to bless people in your community who are in need.
James:
That’s incredible. So people can literally adopt a child and make Christmas truly special when it otherwise might not have been.
Mike:
Exactly. And many times, it’s families—brothers and sisters under the same roof. So it’s not just one child who happens to be in the right classroom; it’s all the kids connected in that family.
James:
And through your store and social media, you were able to connect 65 children with people willing to help—that’s incredible. I just want to pause and celebrate that. That kind of individualized care really makes a difference. It makes kids feel seen, unique, and loved—because they are.
Mike:
Exactly. You can write a handwritten note addressed to a specific child and tell them they are loved, wish them a Merry Christmas—not just as words, but something you’re truly living out.
James:
How did this idea all begin?
Mike:
It’s a longer story, but it started when I volunteered at Mayport Elementary, one of the schools we support. I would come in early and read to the kids before class to help them settle in.
One day, while checking out at the front office, I overheard that some kids weren’t going to have Thanksgiving. I pulled together a few friends and said, “How can you help me put together Thanksgiving baskets?” That year, we helped nine families.
One of the moms, Morgan O’Riley, said something that stuck with me: “If they don’t have Thanksgiving, they don’t have Christmas.” I wasn’t a parent at the time, and that hadn’t even crossed my mind. I went back to the school, and they agreed—we could do something.
That year, we adopted two families. When I personally delivered the presents, I saw one child sleeping on a pallet of hoodies and blankets. I wasn’t in the furniture business yet, but I was about to be. I knew how little a twin mattress actually costs, and it broke my heart that I couldn’t just give her one on the spot.
That moment became my promise to God: “If You bless this business, this will be our tithe back to the community.” Even before selling our first piece of furniture, we had nonprofits lined up for mattress donations.
That commitment has stayed with us in good times and bad. It’s a big part of what separates us from just being another furniture store.
James:
That is absolutely incredible work—work you’ve done and continue to do. I’m sure you have countless stories, and I hope you come back to share more of them. Before we wrap up, is there anything on your heart you’d like to share about how people can live their faith more fully?
Mike:
Living by example is essential, but it’s not enough on its own. We often hear, “Preach the gospel, and use words if you have to,” but you do need to use words.
For a long time, I wasn’t very verbal about my faith. But praying for employees, praying for customers, and actually saying those things out loud made a difference. I want to encourage people to have the courage and faith to step out and speak those words.
James:
I can tell you—you’re doing it. Keep it up. Where can people find you, your initiatives, and your store?
Mike:
The main place is jaxcofurniture.com. You can also find us on social media at Jax Co. Furniture.
James:
And you personally?
Mike:
Me personally—I’m just doing the work.
James:
Fair enough. Well, thank you so much for joining us today. I really appreciate your time, and I can’t wait to have you back to share more of these stories. We need to hear them.
I’m James Fenimore, and this has been Living My Faith on FaithWorks TV. We’ll see you next time.
