Tony
They welcome to making a Difference. My name is Tony Davis. I’m your host, and I am the owner of Crestcom Leadership Development here in Northeast Florida, where making a difference through more effective leadership is so important. And today we will be speaking with Nikki Glanville. She is from the Clay County Habitat for Humanity. Nikki, welcome to the show.

Nikki
Thank you.

Tony
It’s been a pleasure having you on. So habitat for humanity, it’s all about making a difference, isn’t it?

Nikki
Yes. To helping people get into affordable home mortgages and homes.

Tony
Yeah. So so tell us a little bit about the impact that you have in the community.

Nikki
Well, we’re able to help people who maybe have a lower credit limit or maybe can’t afford a large down payment, whereas there’s programs through the government called Ship that gives them down payment assistance, which then lowers the cost of their house if they stay in it for the ten year requirement. But it puts the actual cost of the whole mortgage that they have a lot lower so that it’s affordable for the workforce, you know, and low income families.

Tony
Wow. So approximately how many homes do you all sell, build, put people into? I mean, I know what’s the process that you go through with these homeowners?

Nikki
Yeah, on average it was going at three houses a year. Okay. With Covid slowed things down, ramp back up to three homes. Now we have a home development that we’ve bought, an area that will have 28 homes to be able to house for people, and they’re going to be paying mortgages. So that’s 28 more families and citizens in Green Cove Springs that will be paying taxes and be a part of the community.

Tony
Wow. That’s pretty impactful right there. So you bought a an area where there’s going to be 28 homes that you all are going to build?

Nikki
Yes. And a lot of our building comes from volunteers.

Tony
That’s where I was going. Yeah. Tell me, tell me about that. You draw in different companies. I’m assuming that have volunteer days at these different homes.

Nikki
Absolutely. We have people that our core volunteers and they come and work with us Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays. Right now we have a great group of older men. They don’t have a lot to do. So they come and they help us build, put in windows to society and all kinds of different things. And there’s no experience necessary because they get to have hands on training with it.

Nikki
But then we also have companies that come out and want to help us as well. So in April, I have a large company coming out with like 45 people to help us build 45 people. Yeah, and hopefully by that point we’ll have two houses going so we can split them up between the two. And that’s our goal. And not just one, but have a couple.

Nikki
And then and when we get into our development to be building on stage by stage and so we can just keep the houses going. But when we sell the house, that’s what goes back into buying the new one.

Tony
Wow. So this is a great opportunity for businesses in the area to really have a team building, to really give back to the community and really kind of have an event where they can rally around each other, you know, amongst themselves as a team. Absolutely. And not only impact the community, but draw each other closer and kind of improve culture.

Nikki
Absolutely. And, you know, I’ve had meetings with hospitals, too. I’m working on a youth program as well, trying to get the youth in the community with, you know, pace for girls and things like that to get a pilot program going, to get some of these kids to be able to come in and also learn, you know, what it’s like to do some of this building, but then get to meet and work with some of the, you know, companies that are bringing in and they have a mentorship program.

Tony
Well, that’s awesome. So if a company is watching, a business owner is watching this right now, and they would love that opportunity to not only help and give back to the community, but also to provide an avenue by which the team can come together. How could they get Ahold of you?

Nikki
Well, they can call our number, which I should have had my card with me, give you my cell phone number, but otherwise they can just email me at N. Glanville@habitat.org. And I’d be happy to set up days because we’re trying to get the calendars set up with companies coming out.

Tony
Well for sure with 28 homes.

Nikki
Absolutely. We need the extra hands and and it’s nice to work alongside of those homeowners because they have to put in sweat equity hours themselves into their homes.

Tony
Well that’s awesome. So we talked about what making a difference means to the organization. What does it mean to you?

Nikki
I have found myself in different jobs, and it always seems I come back to a non profit because I think I get more out of it by myself, knowing that I’m doing something to help people. I’m not just earning a paycheck, but I’m making a relationship with those homeowners and knowing that, you know, if I give a few extra hours here or there, it’s giving back to the community and to others.

Tony
That’s awesome. Well, great job. We appreciate you giving back to the community, helping the Clay County area and providing homes, affordable homes to underprivileged or, you know, homeowners in need. Yeah, yeah. So that’s that’s an incredible area by which to give back. And, we appreciate you watching. This is making a difference.
