Speaker 1
Welcome back to another episode of Real Estate Champions. I’m your host, Sarah Olson, and today we’re with my longtime friend Jane Pickett of One Sotheby’s real estate. Welcome to the show. It is so good to see you.
Speaker 2
Thank you. Good to see you again.
Speaker 1
We were just talking off camera about our tenure. What is it? What is it? Well, couple decades. Right? 20 years you’ve been in real estate?
Speaker 2
Yes. 2026 is my 20 year anniversary.
Speaker 1
I can’t believe.
Speaker 2
It. I can’t either.
Speaker 1
We don’t look a day over 20. I mean, we just look at, like, brand.
Speaker 2
New, fabulous.
Speaker 1
Brand new, brand new real estate agents. How are things? Great. Yeah. Yes. Yeah.
Speaker 2
Love and love in the industry. Love in the market, people. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1
And you know, after so many times, like the market shifts and then we have to shift with it.
Speaker 2
Right.
Speaker 1
So tell me about one other band what you guys are doing over there.
Speaker 2
What I love about One Sotheby’s, and they have this tagline, it’s luxury is a level of service, not a price point. And that really, went with me and my vision and how I handle real estate. You know, I, I really, love working with them. Love what they had to offer. You know, in addition to the high quality marketing, the luxury image, all that.
Speaker 2
But but that’s the thing. They don’t skimp. We have a full marketing department available to us.
Speaker 1
Support. Support. Support is so.
Speaker 2
Support.
Speaker 1
Support is so huge. And I know so many real estate agents. They be bop around and all of the things right in your home and your mentorship. Yeah, in the past, you still do some coaching.
Speaker 2
Not as much as I used to. I’m more of a mentor to other mentoring. I love mentoring. Yes. I mean, I just love to mentor, especially, like, new or even even experienced agents. I mean, we have to bounce off of each other every once in a while. You have something that comes up a question, a transaction, a this is a gray area.
Speaker 2
What do you think? Yeah. You know, if it’s not one of those legal issues where you need to go to your attorney, right?
Speaker 1
Well, usually they’re not necessarily right.
Speaker 2
You know. Broker. Yeah. Call your broker. And then you’re like, I need an answer now.
Speaker 1
Yeah, but if you’re if you’re spinning your wheels, having a mentor is Uber important. Right. And so in your in your thoughts what is something that just has kept you going for 20 years through the good and the bad. You know, we’ve all had great years and.
Speaker 2
Yes.
Speaker 1
Sucky years.
Speaker 2
And like every time the market shifts, I wonder, like, what am I doing? You know, what else could I could I do? Because that’s always been the hardest, right. It’s not the actual market that we’re in versus the in-between like that, that lull before the calm, before the storm where you don’t know exactly what’s happening. You know, and then you have all those, like, I call them the armchair realtors, all the gurus.
Speaker 2
I haven’t sold any real estate. So the sky is falling, you know all that.
Speaker 1
Oh my God.
Speaker 2
And you know, so we you have to block all that out, you know, and just stay in your lane and stay within yourself. And you know, that’s what I found to be the most difficult part about real estate. But at the same time, I love it because every day is different.
Speaker 1
It is.
Speaker 2
You know.
Speaker 1
It feeds the ADHD.
Speaker 2
Brain. It does. And it’s the definition of insanity as far as just like you don’t know, one day you don’t know one hour to the next. Yeah. What’s going to happen?
Speaker 1
Well, I always tell the people that I’m mentoring, too, is that real estate is the same. Like the process of buying and selling a house is the same. It’s the people, the circumstances that make it different and sometimes challenging and sometimes just overwhelming, right.
Speaker 2
And.
Speaker 1
Rewarding.
Speaker 2
If houses could buy and sell themselves, we wouldn’t be needed. But as long as people are involved, we’re not going anywhere. It’s a no. Because things that should be easy and should make sense doesn’t happen. It doesn’t. You know, I mean, it’s even the simplest thing. I have this one, just for instance, crazy experience. Working with this couple for a while.
Speaker 2
And this happened for years and years and years ago. We went under a contract, fell in love with this house, been showing them all sorts of homes, and they canceled during the inspection period. And I’m like, why are you canceling? Well, there’s pine trees, like, excuse me.
Speaker 1
They weren’t there.
Speaker 2
Well, we’re allergic to pine trees. I’m like, you walked the whole property. You saw these trees. We didn’t hide them under the rug. Yeah. You know, it’s like that kind of stuff where it’s like, this does not make any sense. But all of a sudden, something changed.
Speaker 1
Something changed. Something probably wasn’t the pine.
Speaker 2
It probably wasn’t the pine trees, but that was the best thing. They could put them up.
Speaker 1
The best thing that they got right. Yeah. And then you’re like, okay. And so for those real estate agents who are just like only dependent on one sale, that’s devastating.
Speaker 2
Oh yes.
Speaker 1
That’s devastating.
Speaker 2
Yeah. And the and that is the biggest thing especially like for new agents. You can’t have commission breath. No, no, I mean they, Oh yeah. And you know, you always have to look out for your client’s best interests and follow according to the contract. You know, I mean, we have to keep them out of real estate jail.
Speaker 2
Yeah. You know, keep them out of trouble, and you’re.
Speaker 1
Using all.
Speaker 2
The paperwork. Exactly. You know, but then represent them to the best that we can, right? You know.
Speaker 1
Any any one tip that you can give a new real estate agent getting into this business in 2026?
Speaker 2
You constantly learn. You have to constantly be learning all the time. Real estate, technology, everything is constantly changing because of that. You know, our field is never stagnant. You know, even the market is changing every 3 to 4 months.
Speaker 1
Agent. You know.
Speaker 2
Nah, everything.
Speaker 1
Flows.
Speaker 2
Yeah, it’s the reverse center will start changing that. We have a new form, you know, so it’s constant change. So you have to be on top. You cannot just lay back like, oh, I got my license. Let’s wait for the phone to ring. I started real estate in the US. Well, when dial up it was AOL. It was done.
Speaker 2
I hop on the computer.
Speaker 1
I had it well, I had a did I have a CrackBerry? CrackBerry BlackBerry supposed to say that?
Speaker 2
I got like.
Speaker 1
Cracked me right? Because I was like, yeah, okay. 123 texting 234 right. Oh my gosh. And the MLS was when.
Speaker 2
You look at that now we’ve advanced just in the 20 years I’ve been in it from dial up to I.
Speaker 1
Oh oh my. Yeah.
Speaker 2
How does I fit into our business. And it does fit. There is a place for everything. But you have to learn okay. This is a new technology. People are embracing it. People like it. So where does that fit into my business?
Speaker 1
Yeah. It’s amazing.
Speaker 2
So it’s a constant learning. You can you can’t just get a computer and be done and off to the races.
Speaker 1
No. You need a mentor.
Speaker 2
Yes. Yeah I need a mentor to.
Speaker 1
Mentor each other.
Speaker 2
Exactly.
Speaker 1
Jean. Thank you so much for being on the show. So great to see you again. For more information on Jean and One Sotheby’s Realty go to Property Solutions tv.com.
