Morgan:
Welcome back to another episode of Ask the Expert, where we highlight experts in multiple industries to highlight the impact that they are making. I’m Morgan Yonge, joined by Fischer. Fischer, tell me about you, your company and what you got going on.
Fischer:
So we are five years old. We’re the exterior cleaning experts in North Florida. Big or small, we clean it all from your house washing, your roof washing, gutter cleaning, window cleaning all the way up to 1,000,000 square foot projects. We did the new Bass Pro Shop when they opened up. That was a quarter million square feet. We did that three nights with older equipment. We have now upgraded tremendously to state of the art trucks, state of the art builds like we were talking about briefly earlier.
Started this business five years ago. When we first started, I had four jobs. I did trash valet at apartment complexes. So I would go to the doors, bring the trash down, go to the dumpsters and do it all over again. I worked at Hawkers in Neptune Beach about 40 hours a week there. And then I was on the railroad with CSX. We were subcontracted to clean under another pressure washing business. Then I’d come home in the free time and do residential.
Morgan:
Wow. And then that has brought you into your own business, which is very exciting. So there’s multiple pressure washing companies in Jacksonville, but you guys are different. Tell me about what sets you apart.
Fischer:
It’s just the knowledge that I have gained over the years and then my network. I went to UNF and graduated with a business management degree. I didn’t get too much out of UNF, but it’s not the grade you make, it’s the handshake. So I had a bunch of friends that went into the construction industry, whether it be Lane, South, Marine, Favorite, Gray. And I’ve been able to leverage those relationships once I was able to prove that we are a built business and we know what we’re doing.
Morgan:
And you guys have some incredible equipment not only in your fleet right now, but that you are working on manufacturing. Tell me about this.
Fischer:
Super excited. So I bought a brand new zero turn lawn mower. We ripped the deck off and had an aluminum surface cleaner built. Surface cleaners are like the concrete cleaners that you see, the big circular one. Your typical surface cleaner is going to be anywhere from 18 to 24 inches. We’ve got six feet worth of surface cleaning power under this machine.
What we’re doing is we’re Siamese feeding three machines into one line so it has enough flow and PSI to clean what needs to be cleaned. We can come in and clean about 200,000 square feet in a day, whereas other companies would be able to do about 50 to 60,000. So it separates us tremendously. We are competitive on price and really into what we do. I’m passionate about cleaning, but I’m not an exterior cleaner. I’m a problem solver.
Morgan:
That’s awesome because it’s one thing to just get the job done, but when you have that fire and passion behind what you do, it shows. That’s how you build relationships that last a lifetime with these companies.
So you do commercial and residential as well.
Awesome.
Fischer:
And that’s another thing that separates us. Your network is your net worth. Another thing that’s built my network is relationships. Running into guys at the gas station. I see a guy in a platinum or limited F-350, he’s probably in construction. So I’m going to go shake hands with him, get to know him, figure out what he does so I can send him business.
I always check in on those referrals too. When my clients come to me with a problem, if I’m up on a roof and see water damage, I have someone I can refer for that. I have a window company, roofers, whatever you may need.
I actually have my own networking group now that we’ve started at the beach.
Morgan:
Tell me about that.
Fischer:
Tradewinds Networking. Right now we’re at about 20 members. Once we get to 30, that’s the magic number. I’m really excited to keep building this.
Morgan:
So Tradewinds. Do you meet monthly, weekly?
Fischer:
We have two meetings a month in the mornings, Tuesdays at 7 a.m., one person per seat. So there’s no competition. We keep a close eye on referrals. If somebody is doing people wrong, they’re out. We have an attendance policy and things of that nature. It’s me being able to mentor people in things like SEO, advertising, but also having referral partners.
Morgan:
That’s fantastic. So what advice would you give to a new young entrepreneur?
Fischer:
Don’t get caught up with all the flashy stuff. Buy what you need to get the job done and buy the tools as you go. A lot of guys spend $20,000 on a trailer, but they don’t know how to market. The most important thing is the customer. If you don’t have customers, you don’t have a business.
Morgan:
Is there anything else you want to share?
Fischer:
You have to do your research when hiring contractors. Look at the Google reviews, talk to people. A lot of times we’re word of mouth, so we come in with a warm welcome. But make sure they know what they’re doing.
We showed up to a job this past week. These guys called us to clean the front of the house, which was the only dirty side. They were using pressure. In our industry, you use chemical. You apply it, let it do its job, and then wash it off. It turned out to be a blessing because I got to mentor some guys in the process, and they were super thankful for it.
You don’t want to destroy the siding on someone’s house. That can easily be done. It’s good to really know what you’re doing and work with people you trust.
Morgan:
That’s awesome. Thank you so much for joining on the show today. Time flies, but I appreciate it.
Fischer:
No problem. Thank you for having me. Looking forward to maybe coming in again and doing this.
Morgan:
