City of Jacksonville Military Affairs and Veterans Department to Host Flag Retirement Ceremony

JACKSONVILLE, FL – The City of Jacksonville Military Affairs and Veterans Department (MAVD) invites the community to its Flag Retirement Ceremony on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at American Legion Post 283, 9459 Ft. Caroline Rd. As the nation nears its 250th birthday, MAVD will respectfully retire 250 worn and tattered United States flags in a ceremony designed to teach residents the proper steps for dignified flag disposal.

MAVD serves the veterans and active-duty population of Duval County through accredited VA claim filing, social services, and employment assistance. Its Homeless Veterans Re-integration Program helps formerly homeless veterans secure stable housing and gainful employment, while monthly legal clinics offer pro bono support. These initiatives reflect the department’s dedication to honoring those who have served and ensuring they receive the benefits and respect they deserve.

The Flag Retirement Ceremony will feature a step-by-step demonstration of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection–recommended retirement process, including formal folding, a respectful burning ritual, and a moment of reflection. Organizers encourage families, schools, scout troops, and community groups to bring any American flag that has become faded, torn or frayed. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of flag etiquette and the significance behind each ceremonial action.

The department extends special thanks to American Legion Post 283 for generously providing its space and logistical support. This collaborative effort underscores MAVD’s mission to connect Jacksonville residents with meaningful civic traditions while fostering an informed and engaged community.
