About Mermaid Boat Tours JaxCurrently the sole owner/operator of a single vessel boat charter business in the Jacksonville area with seasonal service to Steinhatchee for scalloping. Specialized in catering to families with small children, church groups, sunset cruise fans, non-profit fundraisers, and many other special occasions desired for onboard celebrations. Don't provide fishing though...it is a lady's boat...pristine vinyl, no fish blood or stank, lol!
What differentiates you from the competition? It's far more typical to find a charter captain dude who will take out your crew fishing all day and fill a cooler. Being a lady captain is a niche market; she will anchor at a sandbar, serve food/drinks, play bocce ball with kids and change diapers.
What are your top selling services or products that your company offers?Customizable excursions based on patron interests/abilities.
If you had one message to get across to future customers, what would it be?Ready for Your Next Adventure? Discover life experiences you didn't know were missing. Celebrate what you learn with others who are looking for the same.
What is the biggest marketing challenge that you will face in the upcoming year?ROI on these business cards...hand them out all the time, very low/no returned contact.

How is your organization adapting to post-pandemic travel trends? Boating took a dramatic leap forward during/post-pandemic times as an outdoor/’open air’ activity. That said, the total cost of boat ownership has also increased. Makes good economic sense to float with an established charter business and ‘feel out’ the boating lifestyle before investing in a purchase.

What makes your destination or service unique to travelers? Totally different skill set and experience/background with a lady captain…don’t do fishing, but definitely everything else!!!

How are sustainability and eco-tourism shaping your offerings? Wildlife conservation efforts support dolphin sightings on sunset cruises – always a crowd favorite. Waterfowl species are particularly majestic along the St. Johns River and surrounding tributaries. Post-summer/storm river clean-up events are empowering and necessary efforts to ensure NFL waterways are healthy and safe for all to experience.

What role does technology play in enhancing the traveler experience? Patrons are offered a ‘buffet’ of experience options through Google links for planning purposes prior to charter launch. Patrons are encouraged to post pics of their experiences to social media as desired.

What trends are defining the future of travel? Alignment with Artificial Intelligence (AI). One can search all day for destinations, experiences, pricing…but can those search engines truly match the feeling you’ll have when the calm of the water meets your mind…? Try this on ChatGPT: “How does it feel to be on a boat?” and see what comes back.

How do you ensure guest satisfaction in a competitive industry? Key metric: getting a call/text from a recent charter patron’s colleague/friend/family member…”Hey Cpt. Erin! When can we go out…?”

What’s your outlook for the tourism sector in the next few years? Aging Baby Boomers will keep their timeshares/vacation homes. Gen X will keep traveling to new/different destinations. Gen Y/Millennials will do the same as Gen X, but will miss out on being ‘in the moment’ while updating their social media. Gen Z will choose their destinations based on pragmatic financials and focus on diversity and sustainability to keep some sort of balance on this Planet.
