How long have you been in your industry?32 years
Why did you choose your industry?I became fascinated by telecommunications during MBA school, when we covered satellite communications. At the time, Ma Bell had just broken up and in my home state, Sprint was just getting started as a competitive long distance company (way before it was a mobile service provider.).
Who are your typical clients?Broadcast advertisers (Radio & TV) who need to replace their hard-to-remember 10-digit phone numbers or URLs that suppress call volume in direct response ad campaigns.
What do you like best about being in this industry?Removing friction between consumers and businesses/brands, so more business gets done.
What are common problems you see? Many businesses are overly complacent that "our prospects will find us online". But when consumers start at Google, they see ALL the competitors, so those prospects end up elsewhere - even when the original advertiser paid for the media to drive the Google search.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? If you do direct response advertising, have a good offer or some reason for your prospect to call TODAY rather than "one of these days". Also, realize that calls convert at a much higher rate than clicks - due to sales agents being able to create rapport, answer questions, overcome objections, etc.
When is your busy season?Spring, with new ad budgets
What keeps you up at night? That advertisers forget that live human conversations are what closes sales.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? We call #250 the self-advertising product, because when other businesses and ad agencies here our clients' ads using a #250 brand keyword, they get the idea that they too can obtain a Spoken Keyword on our platform. Via our relationship with iHeart Media and national radio networks like Sirius XM, we have advertisers nationwide using #250 in their radio & TV spots.
How involved are you in the community? We support local charities' radiothons pro bono - such as Nashville Rescue Mission. We also work regularly with various non-profits in their radiothons, including Food For The Poor, Save The Children, Salvation Army, and others.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Food For The Poor
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business? Our technology is unique, so that's not going to happen.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Reading history.
