Why did you choose your industry? As a Navy veteran with 20 years of training in dental technology; and 25 years of National Dental Certification. I had the privilege of working for three Fortune 500 companies. Dentsply/Sirona, iTero/Invisoline, Zimmer Biomet, and two local dental labs in the Jacksonville area, Dental Service Group/Harmony dental lab, and David and Associates lab as an implant specialist. In 2017, I decided it was time to move away from dental technology which consisted of sitting for eight to 10 hours manufacturing dental prostheses. In early 2017, I decided it was time to be physically active and my realtor neighbors thought I would be an excellent home inspector since I enjoyed helping people and was friendly. This was not an easy transition but felt confident in learning a new skill/new career. I am currently a seven-year licensed Florida home inspector.
Who are your typical clients?I primarily receive referrals through Realtors and word of mouth through existing customers. When I first started my new venture. I signed up for a year with "Home Advisor", and now called "Angie". Angie's was a great beginning. They provided me with phone leads of people looking for a home inspector. Once I gained the confidence of Realtors, I moved away from Angie's.
What do you like best about being in this industry?Purchasing a home is a large investment for us all. Having the knowledge to inspect existing or new construction residential homes. Providing my clients with a home inspection allows the client-informed knowledge of the home and the comfort of purchasing their new home.
What are common problems you see?The common problem I see inspecting a home is lack of maintenance. Every homeowner should keep a maintenance book to verify and validate: How often HVAC filters are changed, Annual HVAC check-ups, whether the proper amount of insulation is in the attic, have an understanding of plumbing pipes, maintenance on the water heater,
What advice/tips do you have for clients?I advise my clients prior to purchasing their new home to always request a termite inspection; always request a wind mitigation inspection report that will provide a discount on their home insurance; I also recommend a 4Point inspection, especially if financing. The bank will usually request this inspection. And finally suggest clients purchase a home warranty on all appliances including the HVAC.
When is your busy season?Spring and summer are my busy season.
What keeps you up at night?I am often up late at night working on inspection reports since I promise completion within 24 hours.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? To expand my business I visit real estate offices and pass out business brochures, Going to open houses on weekends is also a great way to gain referrals.
How involved are you in the community?Playing golf is something I enjoy, and participate in many local charity tournaments.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is my favorite charity.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?I recommend anyone wanting to become a licensed home inspector should understand most inspectors own their own businesses. If you're looking for benefits, understand there are many choices. A career in any business requires dedication. You should understand the progression to becoming a home inspector.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?In my free time, I enjoy playing golf or spending quality time with my family.
