How long have you been in your industry?30+ years
Why did you choose your industry?I realized early on that I was born for this, so a friend told me I would be good at it. I made the shift and never looked back.
Who are your typical clients?SMBs looking to grow sales but not sure how, or owners looking to sell in 5-7 years
What do you like best about being in this industry?Working with people and building long lasting relationships.
What are common problems you see? Many people just tell companies what's wrong and offer suggestions but then leave the owners to figure it out. Or Companies don't have documented processes and they want to exit their company thinking they are going to get 10X, when in reality they are the top salesperson and if they leave the customers do too. They need to create a process and knowledge transfer to have any value to sell.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? You likely didn't start your company to be in sales or a sales manager; invest in your business and hire a fractional sales professional to fix your sales department now and for the future.
When is your busy season?Typically December/January when companies make a plan for the next year to grow and hire, or Mid year when they realize they are off track and need help to steer the ship.
What keeps you up at night?Thinking of ways to help more customers, especially ones that may not be able to hire me at a full capacity. If I can help an SMB and money is the issue I always want to be able to help them even if it's in a small way for now, usually if I can deliver some value they will come back to me.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Mostly through referral network; Direct marketing can be tough in this industry. People may know they have an issue but feel they can solve it on their own or don't want to pay to have it fixed. Typically, an owner needs to already know they can't do it alone and/or have tried already and failed which makes an introduction ideal from someone they trust when they are complaining about the issue.
How involved are you in the community?I try to volunteer as much as possible supporting my son's football team and attending different fundraisers that benefit the local community.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?I have gotten into this more recently since starting my own company; but I would have to say BEAM, and Rethreaded.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Always do what you say you will do; promise less and give more! Use your ears and mouth at a minimum in the proportion to how many you have; sales consultancy is more about listening than even selling is.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?In summer I find my zen shore fishing while my kids ride the waves. Throughout the year I enjoy getting out on the golf courses even though anyone that has golfed with me knows I don't have much of a game.
