How long have you been in your industry?4 years
Why did you choose your industry?I spent 20 years in the military before retiring. I have had a blessed life though I am not sure I truly realized it or not at the time. I hold a firm conviction about giving back to the community, helping those that, for whatever reason, are unable to cross certain obstacles. We at CHS provide about 200 programs across the entire state of Florida, providing services that benefit children from cradle to career. It is an awesome feeling supporting these services.
Who are your typical clients?Young mothers and fathers. Children in need. Families in underserved communities. But we also fulfill government contracts, community contracts, and obligations for grants we receiving from various business partners.
What do you like best about being in this industry?Providing bridges to children to experience the art of what is possible.
What are common problems you see?Unreasonable government contracts (direct vs. indirect expenses). Underfunded support for back office support services that are foundational to supporting the programs. Turnover rates (industry standard is above 30%).
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Anything is possible. If we at CHS cannot provide the services required, we know who can.
When is your busy season?All year long.
What keeps you up at night?Data management; operations team members pain points with limited technology;
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?I rely on our communications and marketing team to craft messaging that aligns with our brand. I then use that messaging in my own outreach activities but, while I am familiar with our programs at a high level, I do try to limit my talking points to my area of expertise which is technology and data and how these activities are benefitting the communities we serve.
How involved are you in the community?I am responsible and accountable for data, quality, and data management operations for a nonprofit. I give back by ensuring we are providing the best service possible to our team members who are providing the services to our clients. I am also a member of the American Legion.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Childrens Home Society of Florida
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?It helps tremendously if you have a heart for service to community and helping others. Do not fear change.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Authoring books and articles; reading; woodworking; Smoking/Grilling meats; modeling;
