How long have you been in your industry?25 years
Why did you choose your industry?I fell into it to be honest. In 1998 I was working for then-Illinois Governor Jim Edgar in his Washington, DC office and they asked me to cover transportation issues. I had grown up in the Chicago area, so working on transportation sounded like fun, especially since it involved trying to secure federal transportation dollars for my home state. I went on to work for the U.S. Department of Transportation and joined CSX in 2007, which is what brought me to Jacksonville.
Who are your typical clients? Our company owns assets (called intermodal chassis) that are used to move containers from ports (like JAXPORT) or intermodal terminals (like those of CSX or other railroads) to warehouses or other "last mile or first mile" destinations. Our customers include railroads, trucking companies, ocean carriers or big shippers (e.g. major retailers) - pretty much anyone who moves goods in a container.
What do you like best about being in this industry? It is very concrete - I can see every day what our company does and the benefit it has for our customers and the nation's economy. One in every four containers in the U.S. moves on one of DCLI's chassis, so we're vital to supply chains that support a wide range of business and end consumers.
What are common problems you see?We always have to be prepared for major disruptions - COVID for example wreaked havoc on supply chains and we had to adapt to serve those unique needs. More recently tariff changes have led to significant changes in trade flows and related container movements, thus demand for our equipment has shifted along the way.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? My advice is more for any business executive - pay attention to your supply chains and think carefully about who your partners are because they can make or break your business when disruptions occur.
When is your busy season?"Peak" season for us is generally the early fall through early December - when everyone is stocking up for Black Friday and the holiday season and moving a lot of goods in containers.
What keeps you up at night?Trying to make sure we have the right assets in the right place, and are prepared for whatever the next supply chain disruption may be.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Lately we have expanded beyond traditional transportation providers (railroads, truckers and ocean carriers) to large shippers - usually retailers - who want to take more direct control over their supply chains post-COVID. They want certainty of supply and to work with a partner like DCLI who can help them ensure their containerized goods get where they need to be safely and on time.
How involved are you in the community?I have served in several volunteer roles, including on the United Way of Northeast Florida's annual fundraising committee, as a trustee for Jacksonville University, and at my kids' schools (e.g. Episcopal School of Jacksonville, the Jewish Community Alliance, and three different Catholic grade schools).
What is your favorite not for profit or charity? The Special Olympics - they do amazing work
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Make sure you can adapt to change, respond in a crisis, and love a job where customers demand a lot of you but every day is different. If not, transportation and supply chain work may not be for you.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Playing golf with my kids, watching my son play basketball (for Episcopal HS), and spending quality time with my wife Cari
