How long have you been in your industry?10 years
Why did you choose your industry?I can't imagine doing anything else. As a kid we owned a flower shop and my dad was a pastor so naturally I was involved in everything from births, weddings, to funerals. A strong business mindset coupled with public speaking all based on lifting others up and being there for them in their times of need. Aside from that my grand parents were involved in real estate development - everything from condos to BnB's. I even remember getting the coins from soda machines and the Laundromat. I never even considered a "normal" 9-5 job. After high school I went to UNF for Business on a real estate and marketing track.
Who are your typical clients?A lot of active duty service members. All of my clients today are repeat clients, past client referrals, or someone from my database that I have a relationship with. I do zero business with pay per click or web based leads. I do often grow my database from sign calls or even print mail from current listings though.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I love nerding out on the data and breaking down contracts to clients. The educational side of the business - allowing the clients to make their own decisions confidently.
What are common problems you see?Low barrier for entry. The industry is saturated with part timers and amateurs. This leads many consumers to have a bad experience and as you know, a rotten apple spoils the bunch. A lot of energy is spent just educating the consumer that not all brokerages / agents are the same.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? As a real estate broker I handle multiple transactions a month - they may only be experiencing it every 3-5 or sometimes 7-10yrs. When you are interviewing agents to represent you, to walk through the transaction process with you, be sure to ask about experience and knowledge and references from past clients.
When is your busy season?Q2 & Q3
What keeps you up at night?Communication with clients. It is often their biggest complaint about agents, I want to be sure they aren't complaining about me.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Client appreciation events, social media, podcast, Jax Chamber.
How involved are you in the community?Jax Chamber. I have also held a position on CDD boards. I am still very involved with the military as a veteran - it's not just about the transaction but the relationship so whatever I can do to help. Particularly in knowledge about the VA or transitioning from Active duty to Veteran.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Love to give and donate to local churches - particularly to their thrift stores. We no longer sell our used stuff on marketplace but donate everything from used cars, washer and dryers, to shoes clothing and toys.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Go big or go home. This isn't something that you can dabble in and find success, you have to be totally committed if you want it to be a career.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I play guitar in a few local bands or at church.
