How long have you been in your industry?30+
Why did you choose your industry?Born into the music industry, I apprenticed under my father, Joe Sample. My career began as a bassist, sound engineer, and floor manager at The Mint in LA. I toured as a musician, worked as a ProTools engineer, and served as Music Director for legacy artists and a church. Since 2012, I’ve ventured into business, learning from failures. In 2019, I reignited my passion for production in Immersive Theatre with a successful Proof of Concept in Berlin. The pandemic led to Holican Marketplace INC.
Who are your typical clients? In today’s world, music, storytelling, and art are key cultural components. Jazz, funk, and blues, rooted in Black culture, shape modern entertainment, including live performances and events. Holican celebrates and nurtures this diverse cultural tapestry, integrating music, storytelling, and art into a vibrant ecosystem where culture flourishes, evolves, and becomes discoverable.
What do you like best about being in this industry? The most rewarding part of our journey is realizing our goals are achievable. Over time, we’ve seen our company transform and grow. We’re committed to revolutionizing culture, art, and storytelling consumption. Despite our growing confidence, we stay grounded, reminded of our humble start. We’re proud we’ll never regret starting a business.
What are common problems you see?The music industry is fractured. Fans jump between platforms for music, videos, merch, and discussions, while artists face limited creativity, unfair revenue models, and constant battles for visibility. Fans desire a single destination for culture and storytelling, while artists seek the best resources and tools to effectively market to their audience in one unified location.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Building a business is an engaging journey of learning and growth, where mistakes and failures are crucial for maturity. Stay committed, research those around you, and communicate openly without arrogance. It’s okay to say no or admit, “I don’t know, I need to do my research,” without feeling rushed. Embrace confidence in your vision and offerings. If you don’t genuinely believe in your business, it’s time to pursue something that truly inspires you each morning.
When is your busy season?everyday
What keeps you up at night?general next steps. I am a macro thinker. I envision 6 months to 1 year+ down the line.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Holican’s advertising strategy emphasizes organic and community-driven methods, leveraging social media, content marketing, proprietary productions and influencer collaborations to build brand awareness. Future plans include targeted paid advertising and strategic partnerships with festivals and vendors, with a budget of $5,000/month for ads and $10,000 annually for sponsorships.
How involved are you in the community? Our program is designed to embrace the community with open to the public concerts, events, and music classes
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Save the Music Foundation, Covenant House
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business? The most valuable piece of advice I received when I encountered a significant amount of money was, “Invest in what you know.” This wisdom from a renowned businessman has stayed with me ever since. Creating a business demands an immense investment of time, trust, belief, and mental resilience. If you’re not ready to embrace mistakes and rise again, perhaps it’s time to explore a different path.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Cooking or Traveling
