How long have you been in your industry?35
Why did you choose your industry? In the 1980's, there wasn't much of a choice (at least in my world) for careers for women. However, I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher. It's the ultimate cliche to say that I had a calling, but that's my experience.
Who are your typical clients?I've spent 30 out of the 35 years of my career in middle school teaching 6th through 8th graders ages 10-15. All 35 of my years have been in the public school classroom.
What do you like best about being in this industry? The students. Hands down. You have to love kids and feel energized around them if you are going to spend 35 years with this age group.
What are common problems you see? There are too many to count but it all boils down to people with no experience in education other than attending school feeling like they can make decisions about education. Unfunded mandates that put a strain on the education system will be the downfall of public education.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Your education is what you make it. Partner with your teachers in order to make the most out of the many years you will spend in a classroom. Outside of the classroom, look at everything you see and do as a learning experience and a way to grow.
When is your busy season?August when the new school year is gearing up and "testing season" in April are the busiest times in the teaching world. In reality though, teaching is a 24/7/365 job. Even in the summer, there are trainings, professional development,
What keeps you up at night? My personal day-to-day interactions with the students and wondering if they are safe, loved, happy.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? This is not a concept in the education world. Even teachers who want to transition out of the field and into the business world have a hard time translating teaching skills into business skills. I will say that I can't imagine there's another profession that is more focused on continually striving to improve through professional development and higher education than teachers.
How involved are you in the community?I volunteer with CSTA Ohio as the Advocacy Chair with a focus on expanding Computer Science opportunities for Ohio students. I also work through the Ohio STEM Learning Network and Code.org to help teachers learn how to teach computer science to their students.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Code.org
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Trust yourself. As the classroom teacher, you know what is best for kids- for YOUR kids. Work on your boundaries and make sure that you can sustain your energy and ability to continue. It's a marathon of epic proportions!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I love fitness races, hiking, and visiting family in fun places like Colorado and Massachusetts.
