Morgan:
Welcome back to another episode of Five Minutes With, where we highlight those who are making an impact in a quick five minutes. I’m Morgan Yonge, joined today by Andrea Crowder with The Free Way Medical Clinic. Andrea, thank you for joining us.

Andrea:
My pleasure. Thank you for having me today.

Morgan:
Of course. Tell me a little bit about what you do with The Free Way Medical Clinic.

Andrea:
Free Way Medical Clinic started in 2006 in Green Cove Springs. We provide free medical care to anyone who is uninsured and under the 300 percent poverty level. Anyone without insurance can come to us, and we take care of them.

Morgan:
That is really amazing.

Andrea:
Oh yes.

Morgan:
That’s such a great service to provide. You offer more than just primary care. Tell me more about what you offer.

Andrea:
We provide basic primary care, but we also have a dental clinic on our campus. One of the wonderful things about the clinic is that we’re in a new location. Last year, we moved to Orange Park, directly across from St. Johns River State College.

Because we now have a larger space, we were able to start a food pantry. We offer pantry and food items to our clients when they come in, so we’re taking care of the whole person, inside and out.

Morgan:
That’s incredible. You also help with maternal care for soon-to-be mothers.

Andrea:
Yes. Maternal care was really the foundation of the clinic. Ascension residents come out to the clinic and provide free care for our maternal moms. We have about 20 to 25 moms delivering healthy babies every year, and we’re grateful for that partnership. We’ve been serving the community for 19 years now.

Ascension was the first residency program to partner with us. In addition to maternity care, we also partner with Lend an Ear for hearing aids and Vision Is Priceless for glasses. If our clients need hearing aids or vision services, we help coordinate that care.

Morgan:
Wow. That’s such a great service for those in need. What’s your favorite part about what you do?

Andrea:
My favorite part is hearing the stories and seeing the smiles on our clients’ faces when they leave. They’re so appreciative. They enjoy coming to the clinic, seeing our doctors, and sharing how healthy they’re becoming.

We had a patient who lived about 20 miles away. He would take Clay Transit to the clinic and then ride his bicycle back home. He said that was his way of staying healthy. Hearing stories like that and knowing we’re truly helping people who need it makes me happy.

Morgan:
I love that. And you are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Andrea:
Yes, we are.

Morgan:
Fantastic. How do you get the message out about your services?

Andrea:
Through opportunities like this and by being active in the community. I’m a board member with the Clay County Chamber of Commerce and serve on several committees. I attend health fairs and community events whenever possible.

We also partner with Impact Clay Train, which allows us to reach rural areas where transportation is a barrier. That partnership helps us share resources and information with individuals who may not otherwise be able to reach us.

Morgan:
Looking ahead, what are some of your goals for 2026?

Andrea:
One of our big goals is launching our mobile unit. The community has been waiting for it, and we’re hoping to get it up and running this year, starting in Green Cove Springs and hopefully expanding to Keystone Heights.

We also completed a garden in December, where we’re growing items like tomatoes and basil. This allows us to educate patients on healthy eating. Between the mobile unit, food pantry, and garden, we’re excited about what’s ahead this year.

Morgan:
Very exciting. If someone wants to get involved or volunteer, how can they do that?

Andrea:
They can visit Free WayClinic.org and click on the volunteer link to fill out an application. After that, they’ll come in for a tour and we’ll find the best way to use their skills.

We don’t just need medical volunteers. We also have administrators, retired teachers, and others who help in different ways. There’s a place for everyone.

Morgan:
Fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing.

Andrea:
My pleasure. Thank you for having me.

Morgan:
