Hi. Welcome to Living My Faith. I’m James Fenimore. Today we’ve got a really special guest for you. In fact, we’ve got two of them. Joining me today is Loren Richmond Jr. and Joy Hunt. Joy, Loren, how are you doing?

Speaker 3

Good. Thanks.

Speaker 2

Doing great. Great to be here.

Speaker 1

Thank you so much for joining me. Today really means a lot. And we really want to hear from you guys. So I start the show with one simple question. Joy, I’m going to go to you first because you know, ladies first. But Joy, how are you living your faith?

Speaker 2
So one of my favorite ways that I’m living my faith right now is through financial and business coaching. I get to help people quit dealing with so much stress and take control of their finances, build a future they love, which is really important if we want to be able to walk forward and whatever God is calling us to do. The Bible says borrower is slave to the lender. And if our finances, whether it’s debt or something else, is running our life, then we’re then God’s not in charge and we need to put him back in the driver’s seat. So that’s what I get to help people do.

Speaker 1
I love that joy. It sounds a lot like Dave Ramsey. Do you any connection there?

Speaker 2
Yes, I’m actually a Ramsey trained financial coach.

Speaker 1
Okay. So you really okay. I’m not we’re not going to talk about my finances today because you might I might get a Dave Ramsey answer out of you afraid?

Speaker 2
I’m probably nicer than him, but.

Speaker 1
Okay. Well, there you got with Joy. With the name Joy, you got to be, Loren You got the. You got the, the cheat sheet there. So, you know what questions come in. How are you living your faith?

Speaker 3
Yeah. So several ways. So one of the ways that I really have come to appreciate of late the most is I work part time as a hospital chaplain, and one of my favorite things about being a hospital chaplain is I get to wear my faith on my sleeve, so to speak. It’s one of the few professions you know explicitly where one can be a person of faith and and talk about that all the time, like outside of a conventional like faith, community or church. So I regularly get to talk to people about what’s going on in their life. And I work within the context that they, they, they exist in and then share some good news with them.

Speaker 1
I hope so, I love this, and I love that you guys are on together because this is really interesting. What do most people pray for? Good health and good finances. And here we have two people that are living through Christ to help people with their financial freedom. And obviously people that are struggling in those those scary moments of health. And Loren, I’d like to just personally thank you because I, I know how important that is in those moments. You know, recently I had a family member in the hospital and the chaplain brought my, my family so much peace. And, and just thank you for what you do in those hard moments for people. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 3
Yeah. It’s really it’s really a gift to be at, to be present for someone. And, and I like to say, and I remind myself this, like, I’m not trying to do anything. I’m just trying to be a vessel of God’s love and presence for folks, for families, for patients. And, I’m also a Yankee fan. So again, Matt, thank you for that, too.

Speaker 1
We love for Joy. How is it you know, now that we have you guys on here, when you’re helping somebody find that financial freedom? Are you able to kind of preach the gospel to them at all, or is it just dollars and cents and numbers?

Speaker 2
Absolutely. So I try to listen for where they’re at and listen to the Holy Spirit. But so it’s going to be very different depending on the situation. Sometimes I’m going to get somebody who’s already a believer and we’re having a different, sometimes even more of a discipleship type conversation.

Speaker 2
Sometimes I’m going to get somebody who is, don’t talk to me about anything faith wise. And but I am pretty open from the very beginning about what my own background is. They know I’m a pastor, they know different things about me.

Speaker 2
And so a lot of times that will open up a door to maybe some. I had somebody a few weeks ago call me and say, next time we meet, can you pray with me and I? She’s a little rough around the edges. Like I didn’t think that was going to be somebody who would ask for that.

Speaker 2
Also, the last person I got to lead to Jesus was a coach and client, so that was really fun.

Speaker 1
Wow. That’s I mean, that’s talk about a coaching engagement you got there, that you get to, to lead them to Christ. That’s incredible. And I like, totally I hear what you’re saying about meeting people where they’re at, and I think that’s kind of what we need to do, right?

Speaker 1
Meet them where they’re at and maybe plant a seed or two. I think. I think that works for all of us.

Speaker 1
Loren, as a chaplain, I know dealing, you know, with families and loved ones is probably primarily what you do, but also the person that’s actually in the bed, in the hospital bed, going through whatever health struggles are going through.

Speaker 1
Can you speak to that a little bit on on how important it is to be bringing the gospel to those people?

Speaker 3
Yeah, I think something that’s really struck me more and more as I interact with people in, you know, there’s a something there’s something about a hospital that’s it’s a liminal space. If you heard that term where people are directly confronted with reality, with death.

Speaker 3
So whether they’re coming off of an overdose of addiction or some, some, you know, accident or real health ailment, folks are receptive to thinking about big things in their life and their purpose.

Speaker 3
And something that’s hit me again and again, especially as I see young men in the hospital as folks are dealing with guilt and they need to be reminded or encouraged even to receive God’s forgiveness for themselves.

Speaker 3
That’s something that I found more and more that people are carrying a lot of guilt and shame. We live in a culture where people are told that they’re fine if things are right, like they’re just as they are. And I don’t think deep down people believe that.

Speaker 3
I think I think deep down people are yearning for the gospel message.

Speaker 1
That’s amazing. Thank you so much for sharing that. We’re running short on time. But Joy, I got I got to ask you one thing for our audience. If you could give us one piece of advice on how to get our finances in order, is there anything you have off the top of your mind?

Speaker 2
If you’ve never track your transactions or done a budget, go. You can use an app, you can use a piece of paper or a spreadsheet, whatever. But track your numbers for a month and see where your money actually goes.

Speaker 2
And if you earn, that will help you start doing a budget. But that will also just really open your eyes to as as my spending actually lining up with what I want my life to be doing in this season.

Speaker 1
A lot of people just said, do I have to? Do I really have to? Because I think they know what the outcome is going to be.

Speaker 1
Joy, Loren, thank you so much for joining me today. This has been a real treat. I want you to know that anybody that wants to reach you, your information is going to be below this video right now. So don’t worry about that. Anybody I would tell you right now, whether it’s financial or whether you need a chaplain and somebody to pray for you, these are two great people that are going to really help you. Thank you so much for joining me today. Thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you for joining us today, everyone. I’m James Fenimore. This has been Living My Faith. I can’t wait to see you next time.
