How long have you been in your industry?11 years
Why did you choose your industry?I volunteered to do some website work when I was working as a personal assistant to an author. The builder of the website hired me to work for him full time. He also offered SEO services so I picked up what I could there. Later, I went on to do branding work and marketing services independently before being hired by First Call. Been a great progress!
Who are your typical clients?MSPs outside of MontanaAny small business across the US looking to build their business
What do you like best about being in this industry? It's challenging. It's ever-snowballing downhill and launching into outer space. At its core, it's all about helping people connect in meaningful ways. But the complexity of how to make and nurture that connection is constantly evolving. Every small business owner I've worked with in my decade plus years in this industry has been a compassionate person looking to support their employees and provide a service. It's a joy watching them grow.
What are common problems you see? It's challenging!! Tried and true methods become obsolete in days - and business owners that know only enough to be dangerous are potentially throwing money down into a pit. Some services in the marketing sphere have given digital services a bad name (here's looking at you, SEO), even though SEO is an essential piece of the puzzle. Many business owners try to treat the symptom rather than marketing as a whole and miss the bigger picture with their marketing.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? You're not wrong to focus on results. It's your job to keep the bigger picture in focus. When you work with SEO people, they like to talk about Google and Impressions and Engagement Rate. When you work with Social Media people, they like to talk about Likes, Comments, Shares. When you work with Web Developers, they talk about UI and UX. None of these things matter if they're not producing results. Keep your marketing people focused! And keep 'em honest.
When is your busy season? All year round, if we're lucky
What keeps you up at night?Frikkin AI changing how search functions. It's changing how we produce content. It's even harder than ever to create unique, engaging content because AI's pushing it out without an ounce of effort.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?I try to stay active on LinkedIn. I attend local events and am always happy to talk about marketing as a service.
How involved are you in the community?I helped found Woods Not Waste, a nonprofit focused on clearing out dumpsites from local Montana trailheads. Unfortunately, littering is a common problem, and Woods Not Waste believes that reducing the visibility of littering helps discourage it from recurring. I also actively work by walking or running shelter dogs to help them get some exercise.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Charity Water helps bring fresh, clean drinking water to communities in desperate need of such an essential and basic resource.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Buckle up. It's an exciting industry and very fulfilling when done well.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Hiking, running, spending time with my dog, traveling, writing
