How long have you been in your industry?30 years
Why did you choose your industry?Passion- I was a teacher for 20+ years and enjoy helping others.
Who are your typical clients?Schools, teachers, students, parents
What do you like best about being in this industry?People are usually so appreciative and thankful, willing to learn and get better.
What are common problems you see?1) Red tape in some school systems. 2) Cultural acceptance that it is ok to say-"I'm not a math person" We would never accept someone saying I am not good at reading or I can't read but with math we think it is ok. 3) Mindset- In our cultural we see struggle as a negative. We need to help teachers and students view struggle as an opportunity to grow. 4) Teacher preparation programs
What advice/tips do you have for clients?With the right opportunities almost all people can learn mathematics in meaningful ways.
When is your busy season?All year long. Textbook purchasing season is typically May-Sept
What keeps you up at night?Making sure I meet the needs of all my people (employees, clients) Trying to keep all parts of my business moving forward.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Currently it mostly word of mouth.
How involved are you in the community?Not so much, I do not have the time right now. I use to run the kitchen for a special needs camp for one week each summer.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Camp I Am Special
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?You have to be flexible, know your content, listen to the needs of your customers, and be creative.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Golfing, traveling, drinking wine
