How long have you been in your industry?50+ years
Why did you choose your industry?I've been involved in marketing my entire career. What's changed is the target industry and my specific activity therein. I started in the heavy construction industry marketing a product that I developed for doing haul path calculations. Then, I marketed a product I helped develop called Civil Image Systems -- still to the heavy construction industry. Then, I went corporate joining the gorilla in the construction instrument space, Spectra-Physics Laserplane. Following a few mergers and acquisitions later, we became part of Thermo Instruments, the largest division of Thermo Electron, a 3.1B MIT spinout where I served as the V.P. of R&D within Spectra Precision. From there, I transitioned to NextFifteen Communications group where i served as the SVP of Technology and Global CTO for two years. 9/11 happened, my budget dried, and I returned to my entrepreneurial roots selling and marketing my very own event management system under Salesforce. Then, I spent the next several years building a couple of different companies until in 2007 when I launched and grew a multi-million dollar managed services company in the IT and Telecommunications space. In 2012, I sold out and entered the online digital marketing space. Today, I run a small boutique agency where we help pivotpreneurs find their way to freedom and riches.
Who are your typical clients?Today, we work with pivotpreneurs that find themselves forced to make a pivot from their corporate job to working from home as an entrepreneur. Often overwhelmed and not knowing exactly how to get their best start, we provide training and support to guide them through our program that takes them from concept to revenue. Every student who completes our program has the right to repeat and/or audit to their satisfaction. It is our goal to get everyone to revenue -- we give up on no one.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I like helping to change people's lives for the better. I've had a good life and I want to see that special smile people get when they figure something out for the first time, or experience a paycheck like no other for this first time. There isn't a better job in the world than the job where you can positively impact the lives of others.
What are common problems you see?The most common problem I see in this industry is that there are a lot of charlatans. There are many false programs...and people that suffer from shiny object syndrome. People get sold on the idea that somehow they can get rich quick or that they can skip steps to success and they are often disheartened when they discover that they really can't be a millionaire by only working 10 minutes a day. It's not to say that there aren't millionaires that might be working 10 minutes a day...but that's not how they got there.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? There are no shortcuts to success. Success takes planning, work, and commitment. Most importantly, success takes the proper mindset. If you don't have it -- you won't achieve it. You won't even know what it looks like. To succeed, you have to believe...in yourself.
When is your busy season?Always
What keeps you up at night? That one person that we could have helped but we didn't
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Networking, email marketing, masterclasses, articles, posts -- really, anyway where I can capture an audience of willing listeners.
How involved are you in the community? Not as involved as I'd like to be. I am a disabled US Marine veteran and have been stuck in my "chair" for over 10 years. I am slowly breaking that chain thanks to a dedicated doctor online who were willing to help.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Jumpstart for Young Children
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Don't be afraid to roll-up your sleeves. But don't forget one thing...you need to move from working in your business to working on your business as quckly as you can. It will make a huge difference in the level of your success.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I love watching movies. I like to read. I like to enjoy a great home cooked meal by my wife.
