What trends are currently shaping the construction industry? The most requested CUSTOM HOME installations are Home Technology (“Smart Homes”) and low maintenance, sustainable exterior materials. The most requested REMODELING features include outdoor entertaining additions, such as covered pavilions for outdoor cooking, al fresco dining, and lounging by a fireplace, as well as pools, firepits, shade pergolas, and outdoor hot tubs.
How are you implementing sustainable building practices? Aurora Builders advocates for the use of low maintenance and sustainable materials inside and outside of the home. These may include insulated concrete forms (ICF) in lieu of wood-framed exterior walls; long-lasting fiber-cement siding in lieu of wood siding; and synthetic decking in lieu of wood decking. We also focus on a myriad of energy-efficient installations to lessen the demand for electricity.
What challenges are you facing with labor shortages or supply chains? There are still some lingering labor shortages, post-Covid, due to the many small businesses that were forced to close during the work slowdown. Supply chain issues have lessened, and with proper advanced ordering, this has not affected our business.
How do you ensure safety on your job sites? We have OSHA-trained field superintendents who supervise our team of subcontractors to ensure a safe working environment on-site. They focus on safety with ladders, scaffolding, balconies, trenches, electrical wires, and the use of machinery and tools.
What role does technology play in your planning and execution? We utilize BuilderTrend software to maintain constant communication with our clients throughout the building process. They have access to an online portal showing their building plans, material specifications, construction schedule, material selections, change orders, and product quotes.
Can you describe a recent project that stood out to you? We had the opportunity to perform a complete remodel of a 1970’s era 1-story brick ranch home with minimal curb appeal. We added an entire second floor and changed the appearance of the home to resemble a modern farmhouse style with steep gables and a black & white palette of sustainable materials. We also added a detached guest house and a large, covered pavilion for outdoor cooking, dining, and lounging by the fireplace, all adjacent to a new swimming pool, synthetic putting green and indoor sauna.
What advice would you give to someone entering the construction field? Be committed to lifelong learning to stay abreast of the latest advances in building materials and installation techniques.
