Welcome back to another episode of Finding Your Frequency. I’m Morgan Allen, joined today by John Chappelear with Changing the Focus. John, thank you for joining.

John
Oh, thank you so much for letting me be a part of the show. I really appreciate that very much.

Morgan
So you’re an author and you’re a speaker and a consultant.

John
Oh, I do all sorts of stuff, yeah.

Morgan
And we focus on the EQ, not the IQ.

John
Refocus on the EQ.

Morgan
Tell me more.

John
Well, I started out in business starting and running companies as a kid. I grew up in Washington, D.C., opened my first company when I was 30, and built five companies over about 25 years, which were great. I had wonderful success with them.

But in my book, The Daily Six, you’ll find there was a point where I ran into a problem with the bank. The only problem I had with the bank was I had enough assets to cover what I owed them, so they decided to take all my assets and pay themselves back. So I found myself on a new path.

It was like, okay, now how do I start a business with no money? I started doing brokering, brokered printing, and other things. That led me to the idea that it’s really our emotional connection to people that gets things done.

I couldn’t pay people a lot, so it had to be about them wanting to be part of the process. That changed everything. There was almost no turnover, no absenteeism, productivity skyrocketed, and eventually people were able to be paid really well as the business grew.

Morgan
Because when you’re excited about something, you’re motivated to do it.

John
Absolutely. And if people feel valued by leadership, they bring ideas. If they feel shut down, they stop contributing. I call that moving at the speed of “don’t screw up.”

If you’re working just fast enough not to get fired, productivity goes down and absenteeism goes up. What you want is emotional connection, even more than intellectual or financial connection.

Morgan
Yes.

John
I’ve had people stay with me even when they could make more money elsewhere because they felt valued and connected to the team.

After about 12 years, I sold that company and moved to Florida. I started writing, and that led into keynote speaking, consulting, and training programs.

For example, one training was about helping people stop thinking like department managers and start thinking like organizational leaders. It’s about breaking silos and improving communication across teams.

Morgan
That takes time.

John
Exactly. If you want quick sales tactics, that’s easy. But if you want culture change, that takes time and commitment. That’s what I’ve been working on for 20 to 25 years.

Morgan
So how does The Daily Six help people do that?

John
There are six components. First is willingness. If you’re not willing to be uncomfortable or try new things, nothing changes.

Second is quiet time, whether that’s meditation, prayer, or mindfulness. Even a few minutes a day makes a difference.

Third is service, shifting from “what’s in it for me” to “what am I giving.”

Fourth is love and forgiveness. Love is understanding someone else’s needs and treating them as important as your own. Forgiveness is letting go of the past.

Fifth is gratitude, being grateful even for difficult experiences. I call that the gift of devastation.

And sixth is action. These ideas only matter if you act on them. It’s about intention in everything you do.

Morgan
That is so powerful. Everything you said can change someone’s life. I’d love to have you back to talk more.

John
Absolutely, I’d love that.

Morgan
John, it’s been a pleasure. Thank you so much.

John
Thank you.

Morgan
