Tell me a time you failed forward and what you learned from the experience

I think one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a leader is that just because you can move quickly doesn’t always mean you should. I tend to see an opportunity and immediately start thinking, “Okay, how do we make this happen?” Earlier in my career, there were definitely times I moved forward before making sure I had brought everyone who needed to be involved into the conversation. What I learned is that taking a little more time on the front end to listen and bring the right people to the table usually gets you much further in the end. I still move pretty fast—that probably isn’t going to change—but I’m much more intentional now about collaboration and making sure people feel ownership in where we’re going.

What are your biggest obstacles and barriers to success?

For me, it’s probably that I see possibilities everywhere. I’m always thinking about what we could do next, who we could partner with, or how we could make something bigger or better. That can be a great thing, but you also have to know when to say, “That’s a great idea, but it may not be the right idea for right now.” I’ve learned that leadership is really about prioritizing. Especially in the nonprofit world, there will always be more needs than there are resources, so you have to be very intentional about where you put your time, your people and your dollars.

What is the proudest moment of your leadership career?

Without question, one of my proudest moments has been seeing the Dorion Family Pediatric Center become a reality. What makes me so proud isn’t just that we raised the money or built this beautiful Center. It’s seeing what can happen when a community comes together around children and families who need us. So many donors, staff members, board members and community partners believed in what we were trying to create. Now we have this incredible place where children and families receiving pediatric hospice and palliative care can be supported in a completely different way. Standing in that Center now and knowing that something we talked about and dreamed about for years is actually here—that is incredibly special. And I think that’s what I’m most proud of as a leader: bringing people together around an idea and watching them make something possible that none of us could have accomplished alone.
