Success Beyond Game Day (SBGD Enterprises)
How do you prepare mentally and physically for top performance? Physical preparation builds capacity. Mental preparation determines whether you can access it under pressure. I spend time clarifying my identity, values, and intentions before any performance because the brain performs best when it’s not debating who you are in the moment. Confidence isn’t something you find, it’s something you prepare.
What’s been the highlight of your athletic career so far? Playing Division I softball shaped who I became, but the greatest highlight has been helping athletes and leaders discover that their identity is bigger than their performance. Watching someone perform with freedom because they know who they are is far more rewarding than any scoreboard.
How do you handle pressure and maintain focus during competition? Pressure narrows attention. The key is directing it to what matters most. I teach athletes to shift from outcome thinking to decision thinking because the brain can’t execute the next play while replaying the last one or worrying about the final score. Great performance is simply a series of quality decisions.
What role does teamwork play in your success? Teams don’t fail because of talent, they fail because of misalignment. When people understand one another’s values, communication styles, and decision-making tendencies, trust accelerates and conflict becomes productive instead of personal. That’s where high-performance cultures are built.
How do you stay motivated during tough seasons? I don’t chase motivation because motivation is emotional and emotions fluctuate. I come back to my values and standards. Values provide direction when emotions disappear. Identity creates consistency long after motivation fades.
What advice do you have for young aspiring athletes? Don’t confuse what you do with who you are. Your sport is something you play, it isn’t your identity. Build your character, leadership, and relationships with the same commitment you build your skills. The strongest performers are the ones whose confidence isn’t dependent on the scoreboard.
What’s your perspective on the evolving role of athletes in society? Athletes are some of the greatest untapped leadership assets in the world. Sport develops resilience, adaptability, communication, and decision-making under pressure. When athletes learn how to translate those experiences into leadership beyond competition, they become valuable not just because of what they achieved, but because of who they became.
